ABSTRACTAikido is a martial art that focuses on non-violent approaches to conflict. The current article discusses ways that experienced practitioners of aikido adjust the social environments in which they practice this leisure pastime in order to pre-emptively address gender violence. Their approaches compliment the tactics of bystander intervention and community accountability strategies. This study is based on data obtained through naturalistic observations, participant observations, and interviews (n = 15) with people who had been studying aikido for an average of 12.4 years. Interventions were conducted at the levels of policy, leadership, curriculum, and game structure. The collection of modifications to aikido practitioners’ social environments includes resistance to binary opposition between two sexes, social hierarchies, violence against the self, homophobic talk, and suppression of empathy. 相似文献

AbstractWhile residents’ perceptions of tourism development have been widely explored through a rational cost-benefit lens, little is known about residents’ emotional responses and their influences on resident support toward tourism development. By integrating cognitive appraisal theory and affect theory of social exchange, this study examines the psychological factors (cognitive appraisals, emotions, and commitment) that underlie residents’ behaviors toward Tourism Performing Arts (TPA) development. Based on a survey of 435 residents undertaken in Yangshuo, China, the results reveal that outcome desirability, fairness and coping potential are significant antecedents differentiating resident positive and negative emotional responses toward TPA developments. Commitment was found to moderate the relationship between resident negative emotions and supportive behaviors and played a significant role in shaping resident behaviors. Additionally, resident support was found to be influenced by negative emotions rather than positive emotional responses toward TPA development. The findings have implications for alleviating resident hostility, cultivating commitment toward specific types of tourism, reducing community conflicts and obtaining local support for sustainable tourism development. 相似文献

This article examines the effect of location relative to other marketing factors on the financial flexibility of nonprofit performing arts organizations (PAOs). While product development and promotional and pricing strategies are important marketing factors, locational advantages have become an important strategic asset for the arts industry. Yet very little research has been done on the locational dimensions of this industry. Based on a survey of PAOs in six second tier U.S. statistical metropolitan areas (SMAs), that is, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Milwaukee, this article investigates the extent to which location and other marketing mix factors influence the financial flexibility, and thereby success of PAOs. All six SMAs have a population range of 1 million to 2.5 million. The statistical analysis suggests that location and product selection are particularly significant marketing mix factors that contribute positively to financial flexibility, and therefore organizational success of the PAOs in the cities. 相似文献

The tourism literature does not consider the role of the local arts agency in destination management. This paper explores the extent to which local arts agencies engage in programming and partnerships related to the development of tourism. It proposes that participation in cultural tourism management is determined by both organizational and environmental characteristics. Drawing on a national survey of local arts agencies, the analysis compares survey measures of these characteristics to estimate their influence on the likelihood that agencies are involved in cultural tourism programming. Two-thirds of subject local arts agencies report that their organization is currently working or partnering in programming aimed at cultural tourism. Smaller agencies with a range of programs are more likely to have adopted the innovation. Agencies responsible for management of a cultural facility develop audiences through cultivation of tourists. 相似文献

There is a need for empirical data that can be used to confirm or disconfirm literature that makes a case for functional linkages between cultural activity, inbound tourism and wider economic activity. This motivates a case-based investigation using Sarawak, a culturally rich state of Malaysia and which is currently trying to diversify and uplift its economy. Using interviews of tourism operators, artists and cultural brokers, visits to art venues and examination of documentary material, the paper identifies Sarawak's cultural and tourism policies, the ways they have been operationalized, and some of the concrete outcomes. The findings are interpreted by parsing Adorno's concepts of significance and function into their normative, representational and material dimensions. Tourism planners, it is found, have exoticized and marginalized local communities at the cost of developing a diversified economy. The policy dilemma extends to policy objects. How can artists relocated to urban areas be enabled to be productive on their own terms, and how can faraway communities lend support to their artists? This survey-based cross-sectional investigation explores the socio-demographic, school and student, extracurricular, and family factors associated with Australian high school-aged adolescents’ attendance at live theater, music, and dance events (receptive arts participation) outside of school. Hierarchical multiple linear regression showed that gender, age, and socio-economic status were associated with attendance at performing arts events. Attendance was also linked to theater visits with the school and current study in the performing arts. Out-of-school correlates were involvement in a drama group/class, family attendance at live performances, and sporting attendance. Finally, multilevel modeling indicated that the bulk of variance in attendance patterns resided at the student/residual level rather than school level. Findings hold implications for schools, education systems, and arts-based organizations as they seek to enhance high school-aged adolescents’ development and engagement with the performing arts. 相似文献
