Infinitesimal Firms and Increasing Cost Industries

This article presents a rigorous version of the basic model of an increasing-cost competitive industry found in many textbooks. In the model, firms are infinitesimal, which justifies price-taking behavior and a continuous industry supply curve. The industry supply curve slopes upward because of dispersion in the efficiency of firms. In this framework, the authors emphasize the role of the marginal firm. This role is not clearly emphasized in many textbook presentations of the increasing cost industry.

The property requirements of knowledge‐based industries

Summary

An analysis of the property requirements of modern industries such as those in the electronics, pharmaceutical and chemical fields, based on detailed interviewing of over 70 companies, is presented. The factors influencing locational choice are considered, as are the specific features of notional industrial schemes. The key points which emerged from the study include: there is no single type of property suitable for all knowledge‐based companies although generally they can be accommodated in existing premises. Location is the most important factor with relatively little importance attached to the particular building scheme. Locational importance derives largely from the need to be close to a highly skilled labour pool. Close proximity to academic centres is only important to a small number of knowledge‐based companies and is not as significant as has been claimed. Flexibility is important in a variety of ways, in terms of space utilization, expansion capabilities and lease structuring.

Improving the Sustainable Development of Firms: The Role of Employees

Stakeholders have been found to be an important driver of organizations' sustainable development. In particular, customers, governments and non‐governmental organizations push firms towards sustainability. But to what extent is sustainability really and deeply embedded within an organization's structures and processes? And what is the role of an important, but frequently neglected, stakeholder group for successful sustainability implementation: employees? The objective of this research is to better understand the impact that organizational change for sustainability has on firm performance. Also, this study seeks to understand how the consideration of employees into the process of organizational change for sustainability moderates the organizational change and performance relationship. Using data from 92 German companies from the manufacturing and services sector, the study finds that the structural implementation of sustainability is positively related to firm performance and that employee integration moderates this relationship to some extent. 文章以北京经济技术开发区和天津经济技术开发区为例,系统研究了关于开发区发展服务业的问题。首先,明确了服务业在开发区发展中的地位和作用。其次,阐明了开发区与母城基于服务业的关联。再次,分别阐述了研发产业、商务服务业、金融业、信息服务业、物流业等开发区的主导生产性服务业。最后,提出开发区发展服务业的相关对策建议。     

科技企业孵化器与风险投资融合的经济学分析

科技企业孵化器与风险投资的融合有利于促进高新技术产业的发展。从项目、管理、资金三个维度分析了孵化器与风险投资的融合机理。由于目标冲突、社会分工与交易成本的原因,孵化器与风险投资的融合仍然存在现实困境。最后,提出了孵化器发展中导入风险投资的对策与建议。
