This article analyzes the social construction of everyday life at workplace using the novel of Hakan Günday about a touristic jewellery shopping center. It utilizes research propositions drawn from the theories of symbolic interactionism, structuration and habitus. It is suggested that the results invite a need for rethinking the concepts of the Corrosion of Character by Sennett and of Zombie-Machine by Harding in the context of workplace studies. It is also concluded that the study provides a provocative but integrative understanding of the ideologies, paradigms, traditions and theories of action within a workplace generally and also specifically for the tourism industry within the context of structured agencies.  相似文献

This research examines the role of digital technology in the constitution of meaningful work. Adopting a sociomaterial perspective, we argue that meaningful work emerges as an outcome of a complex negotiation between individuals and their digital devices. This process was explored through video diaries and interviews with social entrepreneurs, capturing moments of their everyday meaning‐making and encouraging reflexivity. Accounting for their sociomaterial practice led participants to reaffirm their work as uniquely meaningful, produce more nuanced accounts of meaningfulness and/or make pragmatic adjustments to their meaning making. Whilst authenticity was a key meta‐narrative in these accounts, it also produced tensional knots which, in their unravelling, required the adoption of more practicable meanings of work. The paper concludes by urging scholars to de‐centre the human from their analysis to provide a more complete account of meaningful work.  相似文献

Although the field of risk research is increasingly alert to new theoretical and empirical perspectives, it is still the case that few studies take a visual approach, despite its obvious worth in capturing people’s experiences of everyday life. This paper considers how a visual approach can be used to deepen our knowledge of sense-making of risk, particularly young people’s views on risk. It presents empirical findings from a study that uses participatory photography to capture what individuals define as serious risks in everyday life and how these risks are expressed (722 participants in Sweden, aged 5–33, mostly children or adolescents). The conclusion is that focusing on stories embedded in images independently contributes new knowledge about how the individual makes sense of risk in everyday life, and especially that visual methods of data collection and analysis illuminate how individual sense-making of risk is intertwined with other aspects of meaning-making in everyday life. In other words, it is time for a visual turn in risk research.  相似文献

Using visual narrative art, this study looks into the images of cinema costumes and investigates how the fashion and styles in the movie reflect both the main characters' psychological changes and their identity-forming processes. This study analyzes the transformative effect of fashion (movie costume), the development of individual characters, and social and other situational influences on the heroine in the movie Pretty Woman (1990). Pretty Woman's underlying theme is derivative from three classic fairy tales: Cinderella, Pygmalion, and Beauty and the Beast. Such fairy tales in movie dramas are archetypal enactments representative of deep emotional and physical transformations audiences wish to experience. Watching protagonists' wardrobe changes and emotional transformations enables viewers to identify/self-recognize the storylines and catharses in the movies and often to achieve virtually the same experiences and emotional highs—outcomes which are the modern equivalent to Aristotle's “proper pleasure.”  相似文献

In this article, we highlight the marginalization and exclusion persons with dementia and their spouses often face in leisure practices and spaces. We then explore aspects of a peer-led community social program aimed at inclusion. Framed in creative analytic practice, the experiences of members of the social program are shared through a composite narrative. This narrative tells the story of a couple from the point of diagnosis who seek support and education and eventually find deep social connections with others who are on a shared journey. We draw from this narrative to explore meanings of inclusion for spousal couples on the dementia journey and use a social justice lens to consider how to address experiences of exclusion in leisure practices and spaces.  相似文献

Despite the popularity of spending leisure time at Starbucks, leisure researchers have neglected coffee drinking space. This study explicates how Starbucks consumers are not purchasing coffee but instead are consuming comfort, pleasure and a western middle-class image as well as space to pursue their activities – whether study, work or simply some time alone. By employing participant observation together with ethnographic interviews with 34 informants conducted on site in Starbucks, this five-year study explores the life narratives of these coffee enthusiasts, and illustrates how the leisure space is socially constructed through complex interpersonal, institutional and societal negotiations. Discourses retrieved from these life narratives demonstrate hedonic pursuits without associated guilt, a sense of productivity and a perceived upward mobility. Drawing on theories regarding the third place and space, this study concludes that the Taiwanese incarnation of Starbucks investigated herein reflects aspects of Oldenburg’s third place. It represents an interstitial space where individualistic pursuits are manoeuvred to resist the traditional collectivistic Taiwanese society.  相似文献
