This study investigated why workers in a position of power are motivated to help their dependent co‐workers. Previous research has assumed that powerful workers would experience increased behavioural approach and disinhibition, leading to selfishness and lower levels of help. However, this assumption fails to explain the helping behaviour often observed at work. In this study, 563 participants were placed in situations of power across three experiments, which measured helpfulness, discomfort, and behavioural approach and inhibition. The results suggest that power creates psychological discomfort, which mediates helping behaviour. Providing help reduced feelings of discomfort. This study helps reconcile previous mixed findings when applying power theories to work situations, and tested a new discomfort‐reduction explanation for helping behaviour. Copyright © 2018 ASAC. Multiperiod linear programming techniques are used to evaluate comparative profitabilities and soil erosion rates for corn grown monoculturally and in rotation with a) soybeans, b) soybeans and oats, c) barley, and d) alfalfa on moderately sloping land with medium loam soils in southern Ontario. Attention is focussed on the case of a highly leveraged recent entrant to farming with heavy debt servicing needs and potential cash flow constraints. Monocultural corn was found to be more profitable than any of the rotational systems, with corn-soybeans rotations the next most profitable and corn-barley rotations the least profitable. Corn-soybeans caused the highest soil erosion, followed by continuous corn, with corn-alfalfa rotations causing the least. Les techniques de programmation linéaire multipériode sont utilisées pour évaluer et comparer les niveaux de profit et les taux d' érosion de sols agricoles moyennement argileux pour des systèmes de production de grandees cultyres localiées dans le sud de l' ontario et produisant, soit du mais en régime de monoculture, soit du mais en rotation avec: a) du soja, b) soja et avoine, c) orge. et d) de la luzerne plantée sur des terrains à pentes modérées. L' analyse developpée dans cet article met l' accent sur des agriculteurs récemment installés, disposant de beaucoup d' actifs, mais également, ayant des besoins énormes d' emprunts et, par conséquent, soumis à des contraintes potentielles sur leurs cash-flows. Les résultats obtenus montrent que le système de production, mais-monoculture, est le plus viable de tous les systèmes etudies. Parmi les systemes de production reposant sur une rotation culturale, il s' avère que celui combinant maïs et soja vienne en seconde position, tandis que un régime cultural fondé sur une rotation maïs et orge donne les pires resultats. Pour ce qui concerne des taux d' erosion des sols, la rotation maïs-soja cause les plus gros dommages. ensuite suivie par le système de production, maïs-monoculture. A core set of criteria have been met, so that it is accurate to speak of an agrarian capitalist system in Russia. The development of agrarian capitalism carries with it increased stratification, which is analysed along five dimensions: earned income, land expansion, use of credit, income from food sales and income from household enterprise. The paper demonstrates increasing differentiation between households, between professional cohorts and within professional cohorts. The data showing stratification within professions suggest that intra‐cohort stratification is driving most of the inter‐cohort stratification. The Russian model of agrarian capitalism and its processes of stratification have yielded a bifurcated countryside in which a thin stratum of ‘super winners’ has emerged. Economic processes have developed beyond simple stratification and have created the basis from which a rudimentary class structure appears to be forming. 相似文献

本文以文化研究和文本解读为理论和方法论取向,呈现了对20世纪90年代作为中国大众报刊主要形式的、被认为是低品味的“街头小报”的双重分析模式,即小报作为一种社会传播方式和作为大众表达的潜在论坛。首先,本文对大众报刊样式及其读者群在中国报业和社会结构中的演变与地位作了回顾,并将大众报刊形式的演变与改革开放时代中国社会分层相关联。其次,基于人格化和人物塑造是小报的重要话语特征,本文选择小报对富人、下岗工人、流动民工和农民这几个社会群体的描述作为对小报内容进行话语分析的切入点,以图理解小报所建构与展示的意义世界及其对社会分化的理解。本文的分析表明,“街头小报”的主题与意识导向非常复杂。作为复杂而矛盾的社会转型过程中的文化产品,它们的市场威权主义倾向维护了支配性的社会秩序,同时,它们也不能不在某些方面折射出底层读者的欲望和需要,以及他们在这个历史过程中的体验。 相似文献

We analyze the relationship between wealth inequality and caste divisions in India using nationally representative surveys on household wealth conducted during 1991–92 and 2002–03. According to our findings, the groups in India that are generally considered disadvantaged (known as Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes) have, as one would expect, substantially lower wealth than the “forward” caste groups, while the Other Backward Classes and non-Hindus occupy positions in the middle. Using the ANOGI decomposition technique, we estimate that between-caste inequality accounted for about 13% of overall wealth inequality in 2002–03. The stratification parameters indicate that the forward caste Hindus overlap little with the other caste groups, while the latter have significantly higher degrees of overlap with one another and with the overall population. Using this method, we are also able to comment on the emergence and strengthening of a “creamy layer,” or relatively well-off group, among the disadvantaged groups, especially the Scheduled Tribes. 相似文献

Abstract The use of armaments, diplomacy and economic pressure to intervene in the functioning of an enemy economy has been one of the most disputed concepts of warfare in the twentieth century. In the war against Germany after 1939 so called ‘economic warfare’ proved on the whole a poor investment of Allied resources with the notable exception of the bombing raids on synthetic oil factories. By contrast it was eminently successful in the campaigns against Japan. One obvious reason for the difference is that Japan was an island power against which the traditional techniques of naval blockade were effective whereas Germany by her territorial conquests on the continent was able greatly to extend her control over economic resources despite the blockade. But there were other reasons for the relative failure of ‘economic warfare’ against Germany and these, like the results of conquest, are central to these two works. One was that the complexity of the German economy in its international setting, combined with the difficulty of obtaining accurate economic information about an enemy economy during a war, meant that there was in reality no method of selecting with an accuracy sufficient to justify the deployment of large resources a link in the chain of production so weak that it could be destroyed. Secondly, a lurking suspicion that this might be so caused rapid changes in strategy, so that when weak links were identified the targets were seldom attacked for long enough for the strategy to succeed. Thirdly, the weapons and techniques of intervention in an enemy economy were seldom perfect enough to achieve their ambitious purpose. And finally German foreign trade even in strategic commodities survived because it was also in the interests of neutrals, and even in those of the Allies where their own economic relationship with the neutrals was concerned, that it should. 相似文献

This paper examines the relationship of corporate social responsibility (CSR), tax aggressiveness, and firm market value. An economic model has been developed to show that profit‐maximization firms are willing to incur additional costs in CSR, such as paying more taxes, as long as they can differentiate their products from non‐CSR firms, and that socially conscious consumers will buy products from CSR firms at prices higher than those of non‐CSR firms. The empirical study in this paper indicates that the higher the CSR ranking of a firm, the less likely a firm is to engage in tax aggressiveness. It also indicates that a reputation of higher CSR will enhance firm market value. Using Canadian companies listed in the S&P/TSX 60 index, I find that both firms’ five‐year effective tax rates and annual effective tax rates are positively associated with their overall CSR scores as well as with their social scores. Firms’ five‐year effective tax rates are also positively associated with their governance index. I also find that firms’ overall CSR ranking and governance scores are positively associated with their market value. 相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to advocate a shift in research and practice on organizational socialization towards one based on positive organizational behaviour (POB). First, we demonstrate how the prevailing perspectives of organizational socialization are based on a cognitive‐learning process that emphasizes information and knowledge acquisition. We then review the literature on POB and psychological capital (PsyCap) and argue that socialization processes should be designed to develop the PsyCap of newcomers. We offer a new approach to organizational socialization called socialization resources theory (SRT) and describe four broad socialization resources that can be used to develop newcomers' self‐efficacy, hope, optimism, and resilience.
