Detecting Abnormal Bid-Ask Spread: A Comparison of Event Study Methods

This study examines empirical issues associated with the use of bid-ask spreads in event studies. The simulation results indicate that the distribution of average standardized abnormal spread shows little deviation from normality. Simulation results also indicate that the widely used percent spread metric results in test statistics with low power. In contrast, use of a standardized raw spread metric and a simple mean-adjusted expectation model results in well specified and reasonably powerful Patell and Brown-Warner type test statistics. As the abnormal spread series is characterized by high first order serial correlation, it is important to adjust for this serial correlation when using multi-day event windows.     

A Complete Nonparametric Event Study Approach

Event studies have been used to examine the direction, magnitude, and speed of security price reactions to various phenomenon. Concerns over the lack of normality in stock return distributions motivated the introduction of nonparametric test statistics in the event study literature. A parametric procedure (OLS), however, has been extensively employed in the estimation of parameters for the market model. This paper, in contrast, applies Theil's nonparametric regression in the estimation of abnormal returns; an approach which is distribution free and provides a complete nonparametric approach for the detection of abnormal performance. Simulation results indicate Theil's estimation procedure offers a slight improvement in power in the detection of abnormal performance over the traditionally employed methodology. The results suggest employing Theil's nonparametric estimation procedure combined with the rank statistic. This complete nonparametric combination offers similar power with fewer underlying assumptions.

The Role of Groupware in Requirements Specification

This article describes how 2 forms of groupware - electronic Mail and Group Support Systems (GSS) were employed to support user requirements specification in a university department. The system being specified was a bibliographic information system, while the users were both qualified systems analysts and academic staff in the department. The background literatures to both requirements specification and GSS are introduced and linked. Groupware tools were used to support the group interaction and consensus formation. The article discusses the key stages in this process and discusses the appropriateness of the techniques used. The results are significant in that they identify techniques appropriate to supporting user groups in the clarification of system requirements before the involvement of development personnel.     

合同法上的附随义务初探

合同义务的一个重要分类是给付义务与附随义务。附随义务是指法律无明确规定,当事人间也无明确约定的合同当事人应承担的义务。在合同履行过程中,违反了附随义务应承担相应的法律责任。     

现金股利、股利稳定性、公司价值──来自我国证券市场的实证证据

股利政策在西方财务界受到高度重视 ,尤其是在实证方面更有颇多研究 ,但在我国上市公司并不重视 ,理论界也研究不多 ,随着证券市场的发展这一问题日益突出 ,本文企图在这一方面做一尝试。笔者采用实证方法对我国上市公司的股利政策进行了研究 ,得出了一些暂时结论。并分析了其原因和应采取的对策 ,希望能对上市公司实务操作和理论研究有所启发。
