This paper looks at various ways teleworking can be linked to surveillance in employment, making recommendations about how telework can be made more acceptable. Technological methods can allow managers to monitor the actions of teleworkers as closely as they could monitor "on site" workers, and in more detail than the same managers could traditionally. Such technological methods of surveillance or monitoring have been associated with low employee morale. For an employer to ensure health and safety may require inspections of the teleworkplace. When the teleworkplace is in the home, there may be an invasion of privacy associated with such inspections, that could be perceived and resented as surveillance. A problem of telework is that teleworkers may feel isolated. Methods to counter this could be associated with further forms of surveillance, and fear of such surveillance may inhibit them from reaching their potential as methods to counter isolation. The idea that teleworking may also allow communications to be intercepted by third parties is also looked at. Some, but not all, of the issues considered are applicable, to some extent, in non-teleworked employment situations. The overall conclusion of the paper is that the potential exists for surveillance to be associated with telework. Fears of such surveillance may turn actors against telework. However, much can be done to reduce such fears.  相似文献

While the U.S. legal system takes pains to treat jury trial defendants fairly, it tends to treat prospective jurors unfairly, as if their time had little value. Citizens might view performing this important civic duty more favorably if the court made better use of their time. This article studies the voir dire phase of jury selection in California courts and investigates how it can be made more pleasant and productive from a prospective juror's perspective. A discrete-event computer simulation model of the process was built to test an alternative approach to handling jurors during voir dire, in which some are permitted to leave the courtroom and use their out-of-courtroom time as they wish, e.g., working or reading. Jurors can be recalled to the courtroom as needed via text messaging or paging, so the approach should be relatively easy to implement. Experiments performed with the model found that, depending on trial characteristics, jurors allowed to leave the courtroom would likely would recoup an average of one to 4 h, collectively recover dozens to hundreds of hours, comprising 15–30% of the total time spent by all jurors at the courthouse for voir dire, and potentially save several thousand dollars in lost income.  相似文献

We combine resource-based theory and social cognition theory to investigate the factors both limiting and related to between-period reputational change of young firms in a dynamic technology-based industry. An analysis of computer graphics chipmakers during the period 1992–2003 provides evidence that operational signals are related to reputational change. Specifically, receiving a product award in the current period is associated with positive change and gaps in product announcements are associated with negative change. We find little support for our hypothesis that the reputations of older firms are less likely to change.  相似文献

This paper examines the emotion and tone of language used by e-negotiation participants. Eight hundred e-negotiations of varying lengths were studied and significant differences between successful and unsuccessful e-negotiations were uncovered. Participants in successful e-negotiations expressed significantly more positive emotion and agreeable language, and significantly less negative language in their textual exchanges than participants in failed e-negotiations. Further, successful e-negotiations were shorter in elapsed time than unsuccessful e-negotiations. Logistic regression results indicate that use of agreeable language throughout the e-negotiation process is a significant predictor of e-negotiation success, while the use of negative language is only significant to e-negotiation success (failure) in the last half of the e-negotiation.  相似文献
