The Bell Curve in Psychological Research and Practice: Myth or Reality?

The expression “the bell curve” designs both a kind of statistical distribution and the title of a famous and controversial book by Herrnstein and Murray. The first is so attractive that the second refers to it to give more credibility to its questionable theories on intelligence. The point is that, during the 20th century, the bell curve has assumed a more and more important role in psychological research and practice and have become both a reality and a myth. In the first case (reality) we can assist to appropriate applications of a real useful statistical concept. In the second (myth) we can have two kinds of attitudes: one attitude is typical of those researchers who search for normality in all their data and variables, just as Parsifal used to search for the Holy Graal (we call this “the Parsifal attitude”); the other is typical of those researchers who give normality for granted and act as if it were a Platonic Idea (we call this “the Plato attitude”). The article discusses the role of the normal distribution in psychological research and practice and shows how it can be dangerous to treat the bell curve as a God or an Idol.

Minimax character of the two-sample χ2-test

Abstract  We consider the problem of testing equality of the mean vectors of two multivariate normal populations when covariates are present and the covariance matrix is known. As an application of the H unt -S tein theorem it is shown that the χ²-^-test of level a maximizes, among all level a tests, the minimum power on each of the contours where the χ²-^-test has constant power. A corollary is that the χ²-^-test is most stringent level a .     

A note on the existence of unique equivalent martingale measures in a Markovian setting

Simple sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique equivalent martingale measure are provided. Furthermore, these conditions give us a handle on situations where an equivalent martingale measure cannot exist. The existence of a unique equivalent martingale measure is of relevance to problems in mathematical finance. Two examples of models for which the question of existence was unresolved are studied. By means of our results existence of a unique equivalent measure up to an explosion time is proved.     

Computing the covariance of two Brownian area integrals

We compute the expected product of two correlated Brownian area integrals, a problem that arises in the analysis of a popular sorting algorithm. Along the way we find three different formulas for the expectation of the product of the absolute values of two standard normal random variables with correlation θ . These two formulas are found: (a) via conditioning and the non-central chi-square distribution; (b) via Mehler's formula; (c) by representing the correlated normal random variables in terms of independent normal's and integration using polar coordinates.

本文从分析国有资产的特征及国有资产经营的内在合理性出发,借鉴西方较为成熟的中央银行机制和现代公司治理结构,揭示国资委在机构定位上的“超政府性”以及在治理结构和运行机制上的“准企业性”,试图为已组建的国资委的规范运作提供相应的理论支撑,从总体上规范国有资产经营管理体制及其运行。

文章结合现代外语教学理论,针对目前五年制师范教育中英语写作教学中普遍存在的问题,分析阻碍学生写作水平提高的主要原因,从英语写作前对学生的指导、发展学生的写作兴趣、将新型的评估方式引入写作教学等方面探讨改进英语写作教学和提高学生英语写作能力的有效途径。

基于新常态下国家大学科技园的整合多方资源、辐射带动区域及高校等功能需求,利用扎根理论,结合政策解读和文献梳理,构建了包括支撑服务能力、核心功能绩效、创新绩效、资源整合能力和辐射带动能力5个维度的国家大学科技园评价指标体系,并将评价指标归类为基础指标、核心指标和特色指标,以体现评价体系的多层次和特色化。采用层次分析法和德尔菲法进行指标赋权,并进一步构建评价实施模型。对32家国家大学科技园进行评价,为主管部门评价国家大学科技园发展水平、指导园区建设、制定相关政策提供理论依据。

Exchange Rate Choices of Microstates

In this paper I first explain why most microstates (countries with less than two million inhabitants) have gained independence only in the last 30 years. Despite the higher costs and risks microstates face, their ability to better accommodate local preferences, combined with a more integrated world economy, probably explains why there are now more benefits to independence. I explain why microstates at independence have chosen either dollarization, currency board arrangements, or fixed exchange rates rather than more flexible forms of exchange rate systems. I then, using the Geweke‐Hajivassiliou‐Keane multivariate normal simulator, model empirically the determinants of each of the different fixed exchange rate regimes in microstates and analyze the policy implications.
