This paper studies the existence of a pure strategy Nash equilibrium in games with strategic complementarities where the strategy sets are totally ordered. By relaxing the conventional conditions related to upper semicontinuity and single crossing, we enlarge the class of games to which monotone techniques are applicable. Complementarities between franchise contract duration and multi-unit propensity in franchise systems

This article explores the determinants of two crucial decisions in franchising relations: the contract length and the franchisers' propensity to allow franchisees to own several stores. The results show that franchisers alleviate franchisees' fears of hold-up by providing them with longer contract length. The findings also show that the lower the contracting experience of the franchisers and the higher the potential free-riding in a franchise system, the shorter the contract duration. Regarding multi-unit franchising, franchisers have a lower propensity to allow franchisees to own several outlets when the cost of monitoring outlet managers are high, and they have a greater propensity to offer multi-unit opportunities when free-riding appears to be a threat. The findings also show the existence of complementarities between the decisions studied, such that they constitute a system of interdependent elements. 相似文献

基于中国与东盟1995年至2009年的贸易数据,从产品层面对中国与主要东盟国家的贸易互补性系数进行了测算,双方贸易互补性总体呈不断上升的趋势,具有较强的贸易潜力,自由贸易区的建立将对贸易往来起进一步推动作用。进一步修正引力模型,采用2000年至2009年的面板数据对双边贸易发展的影响因素进行了计量分析,结果显示,东盟国家经济规模和人口数量对双边贸易流量具有显著的影响,而2008年金融危机的影响不大,说明双方的贸易依赖程度已经很高。 相似文献

This contribution aims to couple national institutional complementarities to issues of regional development and long-term
sustainability in Southeast Asia’s non-core regions. A comparison is made of Satun in Southern Thailand and Perlis in Northern
Malaysia. Based on fieldwork data, the findings reveal that Malaysian institutional complementarities result from a key role
of the state, leading to potentially ineffective forms of economic activity. On the Thai side, institutional complementarities
give free reign to entrepreneurs, but they are less conducive for inclusive regional development and addressing environmental
concerns. Based on the case studies, findings of a more general applicability highlight two additional issues. First, balanced
regional development requires a set of institutional complementarities that integrates economic growth with distributional
strategies. Second, more attention should be paid to the adaptability of institutional arrangements as they may actually “lock
in” regions in an unsustainable development trajectory in the long run, be it in economic, social or ecological terms.

We consider the effects of a one-sided price regulation of one of two complementary inputs. The provider of the regulated input is a domestic firm, while the provider of the other input is a foreign firm. This describes the market structure for several digital information and communication services, where the regulated input is access while the non-regulated complementary input is content. We show that one-sided regulation may have negative welfare effects compared to a free market economy, unless the regulator has a first-mover advantage. In the latter case, regulation is welfare enhancing regardless of whether the foreign input provider uses linear or non-linear wholesale prices. 相似文献

In this paper, we take our theoretical point of departure inrecent work in organisational economics on systems of humanresource management (HRM) practices. We develop the argumentthat just as complementarities between new HRM practices influencefinancial performance positively, there are theoretical reasonsfor expecting them also to influence innovation performancepositively. We examine this overall hypothesis by estimatingan empirical model of innovation performance, using data froma Danish survey of 1,900 business firms. Using principal componentanalysis, we identify two HRM systems which are conducive toinnovation. In the first one, seven of our nine HRM variablesmatter (almost) equally for the ability to innovate. The secondsystem is dominated by firm-internal and firm-external training.Of the total of nine sectors that we consider, we find thatthe four manufacturing sectors correlate with the first system.Firms belonging to wholesale trade and to the ICT intensiveservice sectors tend to be associated with the second system. 相似文献

Fifth generation (5G) networks raise governance and management challenges that did not exist in 3G and 4G wireless technologies. Advanced wireless functionality enables new applications and services based on smart, physical, network infrastructures, many of them expected to be localized. As a general-purpose technology, 5G can be configured in numerous ways to support innovative applications across many sectors. Smart network applications and services must integrate physical and virtual components in innovative ways. In addition, general capabilities of 5G must be combined with complementary technologies, such as big data analytics and edge cloud services, to create services for specific use cases. Varying throughput and latency requirements of distinct use cases require differentiated technical solutions. Appropriate frequencies must be aligned efficiently with other features within the footprint of particular, local industrial networks. National policy makers, suppliers, and users are responding differently to these governance and management challenges. These approaches balance differently the trade-offs between experimentation, differentiation, and harmonization. Comparative analysis can inform gradual improvements of the governance of 5G-based, local industrial networks. 相似文献
