Using a multiple-case study of alleged expropriations reported before the World Bank, we examine how multinational companies (MNC) react to the escalating hostility of host governments. Our study reveals how different choices regarding the interaction with local nonmarket stakeholders – which we refer to as proximal vs. mediated embedding – shape how managers respond to these disputes by affecting their ability to collect, process and interpret information, and to act upon it in a way that effectively mobilizes local and international support. In contrast to the prevailing view that local partners in international joint ventures shelter MNCs from abuse from political authorities, our findings show that primary reliance on local partners to manage the local nonmarket environment can actually reinforce a liability of outsidership and even create a ‘liability of insidership’, to the extent that relying on local partners prevents the MNC from establishing quality connections with a broad range of nonmarket stakeholders, reducing its alertness and responsiveness to hostile acts from host governments. 相似文献

This paper examines the determinants of female autonomy within households in a developing country. In particular, we investigate the relative contributions of earned versus unearned income in enhancing women's autonomy and the role of employment outside of their husband's farm. In a simple theoretical model, it is demonstrated that earned income could be more important than unearned income in empowering women. Using data from rural Bangladesh, empirical estimations confirm this prediction and also reveal the surprising fact that it is not employment per se but employment outside their husbands' farms that contributes to women's autonomy. The data also point to the importance of choosing the correct threat point in theoretical analyses of female autonomy. 相似文献

This paper offers an analytical framework for analyzing joint and separate decisions by couples in the context of choice experiments
for nonmarket valuation. It reports results from an attribute-based stated preference study in which members of couples are
asked to conduct a choice-experiment first individually and then jointly. The choice context was the selection of which beach to visit while on vacation in Tobago. Available alternatives differed
in attributes related to coastal water and beach quality such as level of coastal development and fish abundance. Tests of
preference equality are reported and structured so as to identify the intra-couple decision-making patterns under taste heterogeneity
with both finite and continuous mixed logit. Results from the latter suggest that women’s preferences are found to be predominant
in the joint choice-experiment. Results suggest caution in using individual choice rather than joint couple choice when valuing
quality changes impacting on couple activities, such as water and beach quality in Tobago, and call for further research on

I consider a model of plea bargaining with multiple codefendants. I mainly compare the equilibrium outcomes under joint negotiations
whereby both defendants can observe both plea offers and under separate (secret) negotiations whereby they can observe only
their own respective offer. Contrary to the widespread perceptions, the prosecutor is made worse off under secret negotiations
or at best as well off as under joint negotiations. I also discuss the implication of equilibrium offers on fairness.

This research examined how culture influences the effectiveness of the strategic displays of emotions in negotiations. We
predicted that in cross-cultural negotiation settings, East Asian negotiators who highly regarded cultural values that are
consistent with communicating respect as humility and deference would be more likely to accept an offer from an opposing party
who displayed positive as opposed to negative emotion. With a sample of East Asian MBA students, the results of Study 1 confirmed
this prediction. Study 2 results replicated this finding with a sample of Hong Kong executive managers and also found they
were less likely to accept an offer from a negotiator displaying negative emotion than Israeli executive managers who did
not hold humility and deference in such high regard. Implications for strategic display of emotions in cross-cultural settings

The paper analyses the increasingly popular literature on strategic interactions from a methodological viewpoint. These political economy approaches focusing on interactions between wage bargaining institutions and an independent central bank do not follow unified methodological rules and so cannot be categorised under a single particular paradigm. Moreover, the literature remains in a way circumscribed by the limits of our logical capacities and of mathematical tractability and therefore relates to the 'real world' of wage bargaining and economic policy institutions in a very limited way only. A consideration of the vast complexity of institutional conditions that impact economic performance in EMU reminds and cautions one that actual economic policy research is able to cover only very few of the numerous conditions responsible for the overall outcome. 相似文献
