In search of meaning: Lessons,resources and next steps for computational analysis of financial discourse

We critically assess mainstream accounting and finance research applying methods from computational linguistics (CL) to study financial discourse. We also review common themes and innovations in the literature and assess the incremental contributions of studies applying CL methods over manual content analysis. Key conclusions emerging from our analysis are: (a) accounting and finance research is behind the curve in terms of CL methods generally and word sense disambiguation in particular; (b) implementation issues mean the proposed benefits of CL are often less pronounced than proponents suggest; (c) structural issues limit practical relevance; and (d) CL methods and high quality manual analysis represent complementary approaches to analyzing financial discourse. We describe four CL tools that have yet to gain traction in mainstream AF research but which we believe offer promising ways to enhance the study of meaning in financial discourse. The four tools are named entity recognition (NER), summarization, semantics and corpus linguistics.

模糊性是客观语言的本质特征,语言的模糊性是伴随着语言的产生而出现的。模糊语言学将模糊理论与语言学理论紧密结合起来,不仅适合于对自然语言与形式语言的研究,而且对语言教学尤其是高职英语教学具有重要的指导意义。重视并研究语言教学中的种种模糊性无疑对提高高职英语教学质量起到积极的作用。     

中亚东干语和汉语普通话有关动词书写的正词法比较

东干语是现在在东亚地区使用的一种汉语方言,它是由于民族的迁徙而造成的。它用斯拉夫字母构成的音素文字书写。东干语实行词式书写,跟汉语拼音正词法要求类似。比较东干语和普通话中有关动词的正词法,结果是：动词和体助词都连写;动词和宾语性质的词,一般都分写,但是东干语中同样的结构偶尔也有既分写又连写的情况;动词和补语性质的词在汉语拼音中两者都是单音节的连写,其余分写,而在东干语中基本上都连写。     

Rejection of Empathy in Negotiation

Trust is a crucial quality in the development of individuals and societies and empathy plays a key role in the formation of trust. Trust and empathy have growing importance in studies of negotiation. However, empathy can be rejected which complicates its role in negotiation. This paper presents a linguistic analysis of empathy by focusing on rejection of empathy in negotiation. Some of the rejections are due to failed recognition of the rejector’s needs and desires whereas others have mainly strategic functions gaining momentum in the negotiation. In both cases, rejection of empathy is a phase in the negotiation not a breakdown.

Let’s Talk about Language: A Review of Language‐Sensitive Research in International Management

This paper explores the assumptions underlying the core concept of language used in the growing field of language‐sensitive research in international management. We reviewed 92 articles on the topic of language(s) in multinational corporations published during the period 1997‐2015, and applied a linguistic lens to uncover how these articles ‘talk about language’. The assumptions found in these articles can be grouped into three complementary categories that take a structural, functional or social practice view of language. We go beyond the review by also reflecting on the consequences that these underlying assumptions have for the study of language in multinationals. We consider the social practice view the most promising one, and propose a future research agenda for advancing it and thereby contributing to theorizing about the multinational corporation more broadly.

目前我国法律文件的英文译本较多地体现了中国法律法规原文的特征,一些错误用法被反复使用,在一定程度上形成了"中国式法律英语".这一现象提示我们反思法律英语译本存在的若干问题.法律英语必须着眼"语言目标"而非"知识目标",回归其作为法律语言学课程分支的本质,才能适应在经济全球化背景下我国法律人才的培养需要.
