Effectiveness of Spanish versus English Language TV Commercials Targeted to the Hispanic Market

Abstract

This paper explores the effectiveness of television commercials transmitted in Spanish with those delivered in English. The research contrasts advertising recall of commercials for an Hispanic population, comparing the recall of Hispanics watching programs in Spanish with Hispanics viewing programs in English. The research suggests that for Hispanics, whether Spanish dominant or bilingual, recall increases when advertising is broadcast in Spanish rather than in English. A counter-intuitive finding is that bilingual Hispanics recall Spanish-language ads to a greater extent than those shown in English.

All the News That's Fit to See? The Sexualization of Television News Journalists as a Promotional Strategy

SUMMARY

This formative investigation employed framing theory to content analyze the nature and extent of sexually appealing newscasters primarily on cable news programs. Overall, 62% of segments contained journalists with “high” sex appeal, and these were predominately female. Specifically, these journalists were physically attractive, suggestively dressed (e.g., open blouses, tight-fitting skirts), and filmed in ways that accentuated these features. Female newscasters on Univision's Primer Impacto, who double as models on its website, always exhibited “high” sex appeal compared to 93% of newscasters on MSNBC, 49% on Fox News, and 39% on CNN.

The impact of pre-commercial break announcements on audience identification of official Olympic sponsors: a case study

Research has demonstrated the importance of media context as a situational factor in advertising effectiveness. This preliminary study investigated the impact of a previously overlooked television context factor, the pre-commercial break announcement, during televised coverage of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games in the USA. Broadcast advertising is not part of the official Olympic sponsorship package and advertisers must negotiate television schedules in addition to sponsor fees. During the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the official US television network, NBC, included numerous pre-commercial break mentions spotlighting official sponsors as well as other advertisers who purchased commercial time during the event. This study investigated the impact of pre-break announcements on viewers' ability for distinguishing between official sponsors and regular programme advertisers. It was determined that these announcements do influence recall and increase the likelihood that any advertiser will be identified as a sponsor, thus compromising the value of an Olympic sponsorship.     

中美两国影视产业国际竞争力的比较研究——基于全球价值链视角

本文基于2002-2010年的UNCTAD数据,选取贸易竞争力指数、国际市场占有率指数、显示性比较优势指数、纯出口比较优势指数四个指标,测度中美两国影视产业的国际竞争力状况。结果表明:中国影视产业国际竞争力与美国存在巨大差距,但其差距呈现递减趋势。从全球价值链视角而言,中国影视产业尚处于全球影视产业价值链低端,核心价值链环节自我构建尚未完成;影视产业高端价值链运营能力不足,影视衍生品开发不够。因此,积极嵌入全球价值链,促进影视产业价值链的整合与升级才是提升中国影视产业国际竞争力的根本之道。     

云南、广西影视业比较研究

云南和广西两省区发展影视业的资源都十分丰富,它们的影视业都曾取得了重要成就,但近年来云南影视业在国内外的影响都大大超过了广西。广西应借鉴云南发展影视业的成功经验,大力发掘和表现少数民族文化、合理建设影视基地以及加强与东盟合作等,从而进一步促进广西影视业的发展。
