This paper examines the education and training provided by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in disaster management. The research presented was prompted as a result of serious errors made by both staff and volunteers involved in recent disaster recoveries in South Korea, for example following the sinking of a ferry and the outbreak of MERS. In much of sub‐Saharan Africa, governments have demonstrably failed to deliver health services to the poor. In some places, governments and donor agencies have contracted with private companies and non‐profits to deliver health services, with considerable success. Ideologically driven Western NGOs oppose further moves towards private provision – seemingly preferring the poor to suffer substandard and erratic government provision than to obtain their healthcare through non‐state means.  相似文献

The system of social service provision in the Ukraine functions due to its traditional patterns of social-political interaction. Private social service providers played a limited role in this process as their Institutional recognition has always been problematic. We can diversify service providing by the public and private actors interacting in this provision. In the complexity of their interactions the key variable has been philanthropy, which transformed from support of the individual to an overarching nationalistic ideology. The dynamics of social-political governance is expressed now in the tensions between more traditional patterns of interactions based on their reciprocity with the economic, political and ideology crisis the country is facing Ineffective management of government social service providers, prevalence of western donor-rooted Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), failures of indigenous NGOs to achieve the social value, moral degradation and disbelief in democracy and reforms in population characterize social service provision in the country now.  相似文献

The rapidly changing external environment is having major implications for the role of NGOs, their sources of funding, the nature of their relationships and their activities Globalization, the Increasingly multinational nature of business and electronic communication, has caused a parallel reduction in the powers of the nation state to affect development and a rise in the powers of the business community NGOs need to engage with the private sector in new ways. INTRAC's own ongoing monitoring of the NGO sector suggests that an analysis of these issues would be of great value to NGOs and the private sector as they grapple with possible new modes of engagement in their quest to have a positive impact on justice, peace and poverty alleviation.

Relations have moved beyond the purely philanthropic, with corporations giving money to good causes, and the highly antagonistic, with organizations protesting a company's operations, to a situation where the two sectors often work in partnership to address core business issues such as environmental management, product development and ethical sourcing.There has been an explosion in these forms of partnership between business and NGOs. This raises many issues for strategies and tactics to be followed by NGO management. As such this research is of key strategic importance to NGOs and the private sector.  相似文献

This paper reports results from one of the first large, nationally representative surveys of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in a developing country. The NGO sector in Bangladesh is highly organized and relatively homogeneous. Most NGOs utilize a branch and headquarters structure in which branches have limited autonomy from headquarters. At the branch level, most NGOs in the country, whether big or small, focus on credit services, derive more of their income from fees for services than from grants, rely on salaried rather than voluntary staff, keep detailed financial accounts that are externally audited, and hire middle-class college educated men as managers. The convergence to a modal institutional form probably is the result of the persuasive power of ideas, sociological pressures toward acculturation and conformity, as well as material incentives.  相似文献

Agri-cooperatives play an important role in helping resource-poor farmers reach high-value markets. In addition to linking smallholders to markets, cooperatives provide their members with various services, such as extension, credit, input subsidies, and social programmes. While the literature contains many examples of success, there has been limited discussion on the often long and turbulent process by which cooperatives develop over time and the viable options for shortcuts. This study examines four emerging cocoa cooperatives in Peru to determine their overall business viability, the key factors that advanced their development, and their capacity to address the needs of their members. Our findings suggest that strategies for supporting cooperative development have largely failed to address major internal weaknesses and the challenges posed in the external environment. The cooperatives have received time-bound, uncoordinated, and often small-scale, interventions, which have focused on infrastructure expansion and technical assistance. Important areas related to business management and governance structures, trust relationships with buyers, and sufficient working capital have largely been ignored. Shortcuts may be achieved through improvements in access to business development and financial services, deeper engagement by private sector to support the development process, and commitment by stakeholders to monitoring and critical reflection for strategy refinement.  相似文献

Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have moved from small-scale community relief and services to complex advocacy missions at the international level. NGOs that operate in advocacy and social movement are addressed as fourth generation NGOs. Drawing on the literature of communication strategies in the nonprofit sector, the author investigates how fourth generation NGOs formulate and execute their communication strategies to achieve organizational goals. The author reports an in-depth case study of a single NGO. The results identify recurring themes in constructing and negotiating communication strategies in NGO campaigns for social support and resource mobilization. Organizational structures, public perceptions, and strategic approaches are examined to provide theoretical and practical implications related to understanding NGOs’ strategic communications choices.  相似文献
