A European role in intra-Asian commercial development: The Maclaine Watson network and the Java sugar trade c.1840–1942

This article concerns the Batavia (Jakarta)-based mercantile firm of Maclaine Watson (1827–1964) and its close commercial associates in the Netherlands Indies (modern-day Indonesia) and nearby Singapore. From its inception, the firm initially operated in the context of bilateral trade with Europe, in conjunction with its burgeoning role in the Netherlands Indies’ sugar export trade. By the century’s end, however, shifts in the direction of that trade meant that its prime commercial ventures were directed towards markets elsewhere in Asia. The significance of the firm’s involvement within intra-Asian trade and the region’s economic development forms the core of the article’s argument.

The environmental,social and economic effects of recent technological changes in sugarcane on the State of São Paulo,Brazil

From 2007 to 2017, the Agro‐Environmental Protocol of the Sugar and Energy Sector was in force, an agreement between sugarcane mill owners and the State Government of São Paulo, Brazil, proposing to eliminate sugarcane burning as a method to facilitate the harvest. Simultaneously, the sugarcane harvest was becoming widely mechanized while, under the interests of capital accumulation, the mills were entering the information and communication technology era and providing the agricultural processes with more precise and immediate management and technological controls, similar to those implemented in the mills' administrative and industrial operations in the 1990s. Short‐term factors, including environmental factors, favoured sugarcane technological changes. As a result, there was a mass layoff of rural workers and an increasing number of people/workers in agricultural mechanization, transportation and maintenance of machinery and administrative as well. The whole process highlighted the differences between mills, resulting in small and medium sugarcane farmers and mills to become the most impacted, in operational and financial terms, by the accelerating mechanization of the sugarcane industry as a whole.

Chain Coordination Mechanisms and Concerns in the Sugar Industry in Punjab,India

Based upon primary data, this study carried out for the Punjab state indicated that mutual interdependences of the chain partners coupled with the announcement of SMP/SAP for cane have facilitated chain coordination. This ensures timely cane supplies to sugar mills as well as cane disposal and payments to farmers. Besides the cyclical nature of industry that particularly during its downward phase adversely affects cane supplies, its production has not kept pace with capacity expansion. So a continuous upward revision in SAPs has diverted cane supplies to the industry from the gur industry. And, private mills owing to comparatively greater market orientation have steamed ahead of state owned cooperative mills which are beset with several concerns.     

Consumer perceptions toward sugar content of fruit juice products in a developing country

The purpose of this paper is to determine consumer perceptions toward sugar content of fruit juice (FJ) products in South Africa amid the current sugar tax debate. The paper also ascertains how and if consumption patterns and socio-demographic factors are associated with consumer perceptions toward FJ sugar content. A cross-sectional study was conducted via structured self-administered questionnaires, which were disseminated on a face-to-face basis. Over 7600 consumers aged 16–66+ years in suburbs, townships, and informal settlements were surveyed in South Africa. The data were analyzed through the application of a generalized linear model. Half of the respondents agreed that FJ products were high in sugar. Furthermore, several consumption and socio-demographic factors had a varied influence on consumers’ perceptions toward FJ products. This study provides marketers and retailers with new insight regarding the marketing of FJ products in a developing country amid the sugar tax debate.
