I consider modern society's scopophilic fascination with, and hegemonic insistence on, seeing and consuming, especially that which it considers at once reprehensible and desirable. I examine the context and consequences of the publishing of a photograph of a purportedly marijuana-smoking Michael Phelps, who had recently won a record eight Gold Medals at the Summer Olympic Games in 2008. By reading the photo and its repercussions through a visual culture lens, I demonstrate how America's powerful mythic construction of its newly minted ideal athlete-hero became vulnerable. Building on previous work on deviant social spaces and activities, I interrogate this image as an (1) instantiation of the social containment of illicit pleasure, (2) example of an unwieldy image refusing to disclose what it “wants,” (3) embodiment of polysemic interpretations (exhibitionist, disciplinary, casual, spectacular, and banal), and (4) as an indicator of our predictably unstable cultural addictions. 合成孔径雷达(Synthetic Aperture Radar,SAR)只有照射到飞行方向左、右两侧的感兴趣成像区域时才能处理出高分辨率SAR图像,飞行方向正前方的成像区域就成为了SAR成像的固有盲区。三通道(和、方位差、俯仰差)毫米波单脉冲成像雷达能够实现对正前视场景的二维成像,获取单脉冲图像。提出对SAR/单脉冲图像进行图像配准和融合拼接的方法:首先利用多尺度多方向二维Gabor滤波器组分别对SAR/单脉冲图像进行特征提取,然后对两组特征矩阵进行归一化互相关匹配,对匹配好的图像进行像素级融合处理,得到完整的正前视宽扇区高分辨雷达图像。试验数据成像处理结果表明,所提复合成像算法能够对飞行正前方宽扇区范围内进行高分辨成像,有效解决了工程实际中碰到的正前视高分辨成像盲区的难题,对于前视雷达成像侦察、弹载雷达目标区域景象匹配、飞行器夜航、盲降等具有一定的工程实际意义。  相似文献

Commercial and private deployment of airborne drones is revolutionising many ecosystems. To identify critical issues and research gaps, our systematic literature review findings suggest that historic issues such as privacy, acceptance and security are increasingly replaced by operational considerations including interaction with and impacts on other airspace users. Recent incidents show that unrestricted drone use can inflict problems on other airspace users like airports and emergency services. Our review of current regulatory approaches shows a need for further policy and management response to both manage rapid and efficient drone usage growth, and facilitate innovation (e.g. intraurban package delivery), with one promising strategic response being low altitude airspace management (LAAM) systems for all drone use cases.  相似文献

There is undoubtedly hype around drones and their applications for private and professional users. Based on a brief overview of the development of the drone industry in recent years, this article examines the co-evolution of drone technology and the entrepreneurial activity linked to it. Our results highlight the industry emergence described as concept validation, including product as well as market growth with different phases of technological meaning change. We argue that further steps are needed to develop drones from nice toys to professional tools—from photography and filming applications to inspection services and large cargo logistics. For innovation managers and entrepreneurs, we describe what triggers the emergence of a technology and attracts the needed actors to unleash its transformative potential. Our research is based on industry reports, news, and market studies as well as interviews with four industry actors.  相似文献

This paper suggests that the tourism industry does not have to become an economic loser following large disasters. Planning and mitigative efforts can position the industry to function after a disaster. We suggest that current planning can draw upon current general knowledge about disaster behavior. For example, altruism and mass convergence also affects the tourism industry following disaster. Role abandonment and panic do not happen after disaster. Finally, we suggest that a systematic research program can enhance the tourism industryÆs efforts to respond and recover form disaster.  相似文献

Advertisers often use computers to create fantastic images. Generally, these are perfectly harmless images that are used for comic or dramatic effect. Sometimes, however, they are problematic human images that I call computer-generated images of perfection. Advertisers create these images by using computer technology to remove unwanted traits from models or to generate entire human bodies. They are images that portray ideal human beauty, bodies, or looks. In this paper, I argue that the use of such images is unethical. I begin by explaining the common objections against advertising and by demonstrating how critics might argue that those objections apply to computer-generated images of perfection. Along the way, I demonstrate an ethically significant difference between computer-generated images of perfection and the images in ordinary ads. I argue that although critics might use this fact to apply the common objections to the use of computer-generated images of perfection, the objections fail. Finally, I argue that despite surviving the common objections, the use of computer-generated images of perfection is subject to an ethical objection that is based on aesthetic considerations. Advertisers are ethically obligated to avoid certain aesthetic results that are produced by computer-generated images of perfection.  相似文献

Focusing on recent artistic and photojournalistic portraits of India as an animal – an elephant or tiger – that wanders alone or sometimes with another animal companion – dragon or panda bear – called China, this article analyzes the ways in which India's potential as an emerging market and a rising power is being conjured in the popular aesthetics of magazine and nonfiction book covers. Even as an outpouring of verbal discourse from business and policy experts has hailed an India that is transitioning from a peripheral Third-World nation to a rising power, a steady stream of visual illustrations, including, those that deploy animal avatars, has sought to illuminate the vicissitudes of India's newfound economic recognition. Ultimately, my article's tracking of the visual semiotics of India's animal imprints seeks to get inside an economy of appearances in which zoological embodiments arbitrate this non-Western nation's prospects for entering economic globalization's newly minted scale of “emerging market.”  相似文献
