CLA’s,PLA’s and a new method for pricing general passport options

This paper is primarily concerned with pricing a general passport option (GPO) within the standard Black–Scholes framework. We show that in all possible cases of the allowed trading strategy, the price can be decomposed into simple portfolios of standard European calls and puts and a contract we call a ‘PLA’ or a put on the log-asset price. For completeness, we also introduce the call on the log-asset price (or CLA) and explore their properties and applications. The decomposition of the GPO into its constituent parts is achieved with the help of the Method of Images to convert certain barrier option payoffs into equivalent European payoffs. This technique considerably simplifies the calculation and adds significant transparency to what is otherwise regarded as very complex problem. Curiously, a spin-off of the method to price the GPO suggests an alternative and simpler way to price lookback options.     

The influence of TV viewing on consumers' body images and related consumption behavior

Based on cultivation theory, self-concept theories, and gender research, this study investigates the influence of TV viewing on female and male consumers' perceived body images and related consumption behavior. The results show that TV viewing biases social perceptions of body images; however, TV viewing does not impact men's consumption behavior. For women, in contrast, TV viewing increases the real–ideal self discrepancy, which, in turn, leads to consumption behavior in order to achieve ideal bodies. For both groups, TV viewing increases body dissatisfaction; also, general beliefs about body images influence related behavior. The results provide some interesting contributions to theory and practice.

Energy and urban form. The growth of European cities on the basis of night-time brightness

The European urban system has experienced significant transformations over the last two decades, affecting both the system’s articulation and hierarchy, and the morphology of urban areas. The sources of information on land use, although increasingly precise and exhaustive, present some limitations when it comes to identifying and quantifying this development, particularly due to their sporadic nature. In this context, the advances in the availability, precision, territorial coverage and recurrence of night-time satellite images offer new opportunities to assess the transformation of land uses. Under the assumption that there is a direct relationship between light emissions and the level of urbanisation, the present study identifies the development of the European urban system between 1992 and 2012. In this respect, the level of brightness suggests that the extension of urban land uses has been much greater than those calculated by using other sources, such as aerial photography or planning regulations. The contrast with these sources demonstrates that, even though night-time images are subject to significant limitations, their use can have advantages in the explanation of new patterns of land use. Thus, brightness could contribute to a more complex picture of the urbanization process, measuring not only the artificialisation of land but also the spread and intensity of urban uses of space.     

Toward a critical analysis of tourism representations

This paper advances a “critical analysis of tourism representations” through examination of photographic postcards of African Americans from the South during the period 1893 to 1917. Analysis of these photographic images reveals that specific iconographic strategies were employed by postcard photographers to culturally inscribe black bodies with “Otherness”. Analysis of the postcard senders' messages reveals that these texts were often interpreted by tourists as interchangeable images of the mythic Old South or as attempts at humor. These images positioned black subjects in a racist regime of representation that constructed subjectivities for those depicted and identities for their viewers.     

Taking a hit: the consumptive spectacle of marijuana in a celebrity visual culture

I consider modern society's scopophilic fascination with, and hegemonic insistence on, seeing and consuming, especially that which it considers at once reprehensible and desirable. I examine the context and consequences of the publishing of a photograph of a purportedly marijuana-smoking Michael Phelps, who had recently won a record eight Gold Medals at the Summer Olympic Games in 2008. By reading the photo and its repercussions through a visual culture lens, I demonstrate how America's powerful mythic construction of its newly minted ideal athlete-hero became vulnerable. Building on previous work on deviant social spaces and activities, I interrogate this image as an (1) instantiation of the social containment of illicit pleasure, (2) example of an unwieldy image refusing to disclose what it “wants,” (3) embodiment of polysemic interpretations (exhibitionist, disciplinary, casual, spectacular, and banal), and (4) as an indicator of our predictably unstable cultural addictions. Implications follow.     

Natural and Built Photographic Images: Preference,Complexity, and Recall

An investigation of the effect of natural versus built images of tourism activities on consumer responses was undertaken, using a selection of tourism promotion photographs. A sample of 156 males and 175 females provided ratings for images including: preference (liking), degree of complexity, consumption vision, and recall. The research provides evidence for consumer preference for natural versus built images, shows the role of complexity as an association to image type, and demonstrates that areas of interest most liked within an image are different by gender. Tourism activity images that are predominantly natural are more likely to be recalled. This study contributes to the application of a new method using areas of interest to pinpoint elements of images that are most interesting.     

First steps in developing an automated aerial surveillance approach

Partners in emerging risk representative application (ERRA) A3 ‘Emerging risks related to the industrial use of automated and un-manned surveillance of industrial infrastructure’ develop a set of new technologies to automate aerial surveillance by collecting images with a drone and automatically processing them to identify threats to buried oil and gas transmission pipelines. Progress on two aspects is presented, on one hand, technology development, and on the other hand, dealing with the emerging risks associated with these new technologies. Technology development covers three functions assembled in a workflow:

? Image collection via a light drone with an autonomous navigation system and image geographical positioning system (GPS) referencing capabilities.

? Image automated pre-processing: image assembly and georeferencing.

? Threat detection: image analysis by change detection is performed using Definiens software for identifying external interferences like construction work and excavations threatening the pipeline.

This set of technologies is perceived as an emerging risk that is appraised from several points of view:

? Technology: unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), image georeferencing and assembly, change detection for threat identification.

? Human and Organisational and Communication: investigate the acceptance of this technology by the population and local authorities.

? Regulatory: check conditions that will ensure acceptance of operational use of light drones in some European countries.

? This general approach is needed to ensure both technology optimisation and the shortest path to reliable practical applications.
