The Adoption of Sustainable Manufacturing Practices in the Caribbean

The Caribbean region is awakening to the reality that environmental sustainability is fast becoming a major business performance dimension that is shaping the competitive landscape for manufacturers. This research attempts to gain a picture of the current level of emphasis on environmental sustainability among manufacturers in five Caribbean countries. This paper reports on the level of awareness of the concept of sustainable manufacturing, the sustainability practices Caribbean manufacturers are currently engaged in, and the barriers preventing the adoption of sustainability practices. The findings from our survey show that the majority of Caribbean manufacturers have little knowledge of the concept of sustainable manufacturing and the adoption of sustainability practices is low. In light of these findings, the paper discusses potential roles for Caribbean governments, manufacturing associations, and educational institutions in addressing the need for greater emphasis on sustainable manufacturing in the region. 随着2011年1月1日新《工伤保险条例》的正式实施,新条例进一步明确和扩大了职工上下班途中工伤认定范围,却也引发了一系列新的思考,诸如上下班途中如何界定、非本人主要责任范围的确定、非交通事故能否认定为工伤等问题,都值得我们认真去探讨和研究。本文将结合具体案例探讨职工上下班途中工伤认定条文的理解和适用问题。     

Finnish prohibition as an economic policy issue

Abstract

The experience of the Finnish Prohibition Act, which was in force from 1919 to 1932, shows that Finnish prohibition was not simply a question of ethics or morals, but was influenced in great measure by questions of economic policy. It can also be said that prohibition and the expedience of ‘going dry’ were examined from the economic viewpoint not only at the time in 1931 when the political decision-makers were deciding whether or not the experiment should be continued, but had been seen and discussed in this light right from the time of the passing of the Act.     

Does organizational innovation moderate technical innovation directly or indirectly?

We find a divergence in the literature regarding the treatment of how organizational innovation affects innovation and performance. One point of view suggests that organizational innovation impacts performance only, while the other suggests that it impacts technical innovation and firm performance. We use the framework of Crepon-Duguet-Mairesse (CDM) to control for endogeneity; we also use two different measures for organizational innovation. Our contributions to the literature are: the CDM framework in this context is novel; prior research either did not/could not control for endogeneity whereas the CDM framework mitigates this. To discriminate between the direct and indirect approach, we implemented AIC and BIC tests. We find that for the innovation equations in all cases and regardless of which organizational innovation variable is used the direct model is preferable. In contrast, for the productivity equations, we find that in all cases the indirect model is preferable. Thus we do not have a definitive statistical test for which model is superior. Yet, it is our contention that organizational innovation is a new routine within the firm that should impact technical innovation. Furthermore, organizational design theories deduce that organizational innovation should impact technical innovation-implying that the direct model is indeed preferable.     

试论黄宗羲的乡俗治理思想--以黄宗羲对命运观与葬地制的批评为例

黄宗羲的儒学思想虽然尚未完全摆脱传统儒学的某些局限，但是从他对乡俗礼制中流行的命运观与葬地制的评价来看，他的思想与近代的科学精神相比已经毫不逊色，由这些批评构成的黄宗羲乡俗治理思想可以作为现代社会治理工作的重要参考。

当前国内学术界对政治教育的内涵和基本特征等研究整体上呈兴起之势,但尚未进行专门系统、深入的研究,尚未形成系统的理论研究框架,也没有形成专门的基础理论专著。
