Sequential estimation of means of linear processes

First the minimum risk point estimation as well as the fixed-width confidence interval problems for the mean parameter of a linear process are addressed under the framework of Fakhre-Zakeri and Lee (1992). The accelerated versions of their full sequential methodologies are introduced in order to achieve operational savings. Next, multi-sample analogs are discussed along the lines of Mukhopadhyay and Sriram (1992) both under full sequential as well as accelerated sequential sampling. In either setup, the first-order asymptotic characteristics are highlighted.

When is a Bribe a Bribe? Teaching a Workable Definition of Bribery

This paper presents an outline forteaching about bribery. The outline is based onthe presumption that a payment, once defined asa ``bribe' is by definition unethical. Inaddition, the paper develops a simple yetworkable definition of bribery based on theprincipal-agent framework. The idea is that anypayment made to a principal, for any purpose,is not by definition a bribe; however, anypayment made to an agent is a bribe if theagent retains the payment.

Exercise Regions And Efficient Valuation Of American Lookback Options

This paper presents an efficient method to compute the values and early exercise boundaries of American fixed strike lookback options. The method reduces option valuation to a single optimal stopping problem for standard Brownian motion and an associated path-dependent functional, indexed by one parameter in the absence of dividends and by two parameters in the presence of a dividend rate. Numerical results obtained by this method show that, after a space-time transformation, the stopping boundaries are well approximated by certain piecewise linear functions with a few pieces, leading to fast and accurate approximations for American lookback option values. An explicit decomposition formula for American lookback options is derived and applied not only to the development of these approximations but also to the asymptotic analysis of the early exercise boundary near the expiration date.

Optimal deterministic contracting mechanisms for principal-agent problems with moral hazard and adverse selection

For the principal-agent problem with moral hazard and adverse selection we establish that within the collection of all measurable, deterministic contracting mechanisms satisfying the individual rationality and incentive compatibility constraints there exists one that is optimal for a risk averse principal contracting with a risk averse agent. In addition to demonstrating existence, one of the main contributions of the paper is to show that, in general, centralized contracting implemented via a contracting mechanism is equivalent to delegated contracting implemented via a contract menu. Thus, contracting can always be delegated to the agent without gain or loss to the principal. Based on this result, the existence of an optimal contracting mechanism for the principal-agent problem is established by showing that there exists an optimal contract menu for the equivalent delegated contracting problem.
