Based on the experiments of utilization of garlic processing wastewater in a lotus pond, this study demonstrates that lotus pond wetlands have a remarkable ability to remove organic pollutants and decrease chemical oxygen demand(CODCr), biochemical oxygen demand(BOD5), and suspended substances(SS) in garlic processing wastewater. Results also show evident effects of lotus roots on absorption of NH3-N. The pH value in a lotus pond with wastewater discharged was relatively stable. The water quality in the lotus pond reached the class Ⅱ emission standard, according to the Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard(GB8978-1996), seven days after pretreated garlic processing wastewater had been discharged into the lotus pond. Garlic processing wastewater irrigation does not produce pollution in the pond sediment and has no negative effect on the growth of lotus roots. Due to utilization of garlic processing wastewater, the output of lotus roots increased by 3.0% to 8.3%, and the quality of lotus roots was improved. A survey over a 3-year period, which commenced in 1987, of the plant and bird communities along 1200 km of river in Lincolnshire and South Humberside, Eastern England, is described. Analysis of data from 247 km of river recorded a great diversity of wildlife, comprising 570 species of plant and 80 species of breeding birds. The management value of such surveys is discussed and these include the preparation of detailed maps of each 500m section of river, which illustrate the habitat structure, and plant and bird communities. A maintenance procedure for each 500 m section of river is then agreed between conservation and operations personnel, preventing areas of wildlife importance from being accidentally destroyed. An index which combines both the diversity and rarity of the plant and bird communities is proposed as a measure of conservation importance. This index allows sections of river to be graded according to their conservation value into one of five groups. The surveys also enable predictions to be made of the effects of management actions on the wildlife and provide information by which fundamental reviews of operational activities can be carried out. 相似文献

The non-persistent herbicides glyphosate and 2,4-D amine were applied to riparian stands of R. japonica on the banks of the River Cynon, South Wales at doses of 2154 g and 2790 g active ingredient (a.i.) ha?1 respectively. Glyphosate being tested with one or two applications per season, 2,4-D amine with two only. Two weeks after spraying, the biomass and leaf area ratio of shoots in all treated plots was depressed but was significantly (P < 0–01) lower in the 2,4-D amine plots. Ten weeks after treatment shoots had begun to recover but the biomass was still < 40 per cent of the control areas. Rapid (six weeks after treatment) recovery of Leaf Area Ratio was also observed. Second applications of glyphosate and 2,4-D amine to the respective plots resulted in shoot death after four weeks. Management recommendations are made for the control of R. japonica on riverbanks based on the results presented. 相似文献
