It is often argued that technical change is responsible for the increase in wage inequality in Britain and the United States in the 1980s and 1990s. In this paper we examine this argument using data from individuals and establishments. It is found that the presence of micro-electronic technologies in workplaces is associated with higher earnings, especially for skilled workers. Decompositions suggest that technical change could have been a cause of the increase in skills premium for highly skilled workers. Nevertheless, our view is that the correlation between wages and plant-level technology is mainly driven by the effect of high wages on the propensity to introduce new technologies rather than vice versa. This view is supported by simultaneous models of the wage-technology relationship.  相似文献

We use a multivariate generalized autoregressive heteroskedasticity model (M‐GARCH) to examine three stock indexes and their associated futures prices: the New York Stock Exchange Composite, S&P 500, and Toronto 35. The North American context is significant because markets in Canada and the United States share similar structures and regulatory environments. Our model allows examination of dependence in volatility as it captures time variation in volatility and cross‐market influences. Estimated time variation in volatility is significant, and the volatilities are highly positively correlated. Yet, we find that the correlation in North American index and futures markets has declined over time.  相似文献

Although many organizations find teams to be important to their success, few have implemented reward systems that encourage team effort. This study examines the practices of 35 firms using team‐based reward programs and identifies some features of these programs that improve their effectiveness. The results indicate that the most valued programs were those associated with (1) high levels of communication to employees about the specifics of the plan, (2) strong worker involvement in the plan's design and implementation, and (3) team members' perceptions that the pay system was fair. This paper provides an overview of different metrics to quantify the impact of scholarly work in Family and Consumer Sciences, for scholars involved in the tenure and promotion process. Even though each institution will have their set of rules, most professors in university settings are increasingly subjected to monitoring and evaluation of their research outputs. This paper describes several metrics that are valid and reliable including age of the journal, acceptance rate, ISI impact factors, the SJR journal ranking, and the journals’ h‐index. Two author‐level metrics, the Hirsh h‐index and the HLA index, are described. In the remainder of the article, three other quantifiable criteria are included.  相似文献

This conceptual paper discusses the definitions of financial education, financial literacy, financial capability, financial counseling, financial planning, and financial coaching. Financial therapy is mentioned briefly but it will be addressed in a subsequent paper. Because the definitions of these concepts are not universally accepted, the terms are often used interchangeably. Therefore, the goal of the paper is to initiate dialogue about the meaning of the terms and their usage among educators, practitioners, and researchers. To relieve the lack of clarity, implications are presented for research, training, and intervention programs.  相似文献

The paper presents an econometric model of dynamic agricultural input demand functions that include research based technical change and autoregressive disturbances and fits the model to annual data lor a set of stale aggregates pooled over 1950-1982. The methodological approach is one of developing a theoretical foundation for a dynamic input demand system and accepting state aggreage behavior as approximated by nonlinear adjustment costs and long-term profit maximization. Although other studies have largely ignored autocorrelation m dynamic input demand systems, the results show shorter adjustment lags with autocorrelation than without. Dynamic input demand own-price elasticities for the six input groups are inelastic, ami the demand functions possess significant cross-price and research effects.  相似文献
