Cross hedging under multiplicative basis risk

Cross hedging price risk in an incomplete financial market creates basis risk. We propose a new way of modeling basis risk where price risk and basis risk are combined in a multiplicative way. Under this specification, positive prudence is a necessary and sufficient condition for underhedging in an unbiased market. Using the example of cross hedging jet fuel price risk with crude oil futures, we show that the new specification is superior in describing the price series and that optimal cross hedges differ significantly from those derived under the traditional additive cross hedging model.     

Estimating portfolio risk for tail risk protection strategies

We forecast portfolio risk for managing dynamic tail risk protection strategies, based on extreme value theory, expectile regression, copula‐GARCH and dynamic generalized autoregressive score models. Utilizing a loss function that overcomes the lack of elicitability for expected shortfall, we propose a novel expected shortfall (and value‐at‐risk) forecast combination approach, which dominates simple and sophisticated standalone models as well as a simple average combination approach in modeling the tail of the portfolio return distribution. While the associated dynamic risk targeting or portfolio insurance strategies provide effective downside protection, the latter strategies suffer less from inferior risk forecasts, given the defensive portfolio insurance mechanics.

Modeling a Multivariate Transaction Process

In this paper the dynamics of a joint transaction process areinvestigated. The transaction process is characterized by fourmarks: price changes, transaction volumes, bid–ask spreadsand intertrade durations. Based on a copula approach, a modelfor their joint density is proposed, which avoids forcing apriori assumptions on the instantaneous causality relationshipsbetween the four variables as necessary in decomposition models,where the joint density is decomposed into its conditional andunconditional densities. The price change process is treatedas a discrete process and specified with an integer count hurdlemodel and the transaction volumes, bid–ask spreads, andtrade durations processes are modeled along the lines of fractionallyintegrated autoregressive conditional models, which are suitedvery well to capture the high persistency, empirically observedin these processes. The model is applied to three stocks tradedat the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in May, 2001 and we investigateseveral market microstructure hypotheses in the empirical partof this paper.

Geschichtliche Kenntnisse und ein sensibler Umgang mit re-traumatisierten Menschen sind eine Voraussetzung, um solche Situationen nicht eskalieren zu lassen.

Cross-Sectoral Coordination of Disaster Relief

Abstract

Coordinating organizational activity across different sectors is crucial in disaster management. We analysed the response of 291 aid workers to the Haiti earthquake in 2010 and found that common incentives and a high degree of equality among aid organizations positively affected perceived network coordination. Large and public organizations were more likely to take leadership roles and high numbers of public organizations involved in the disaster response network led to improved network coordination. These results indicate the need for mechanisms that enable smaller and non-profit organizations to participate in network coordination and leadership.
