An algebraic generalisation of some variants of simple correspondence analysis

For an analysis of the association between two categorical variables that are cross-classified to form a contingency table, graphical procedures have been central to this analysis. In particular, correspondence analysis has grown to be a popular method for obtaining such a summary and there is a great variety of different approaches that one may consider to perform. In this paper, we shall introduce a simple algebraic generalisation of some of the more common approaches to obtaining a graphical summary of association, where these approaches are akin to the correspondence analysis of a two-way contingency table. Specific cases of the generalised procedure include the classical and non-symmetrical correspondence plots and the symmetrical and isometric biplots.

Segmentation by visitor motivation in three Kenyan national reserves

This study addresses the needs of three national reserves in north central Kenya for developing a tourism strategy aimed at enhancing tourist opportunities at the reserves. In order to adequately address visitor needs, the reserve managers must first understand the motivations for different types of visitors. A factor-cluster approach was employed to identify visitor segment profiles based on their motivations for visiting the reserves. A principal components analysis of motivations revealed eight motivation factors, and three distinct visitor segments were identified using an ipsative clustering method. These segments included Escapists, Learners and Spiritualists. Understanding the differences in these visitor segments will help managers of the reserves better provide alternative activities and services to tourists. Management recommendations include providing scenic and expansive landscape viewing opportunities and developing a more competent and knowledgeable ranger corps capable of visitor education and outreach initiatives.     

Simple Correspondence Analysis: A Bibliographic Review

Over the past few decades correspondence analysis has gained an international reputation as a powerful statistical tool for the graphical analysis of contingency tables. This popularity stems from its development and application in many European countries, especially France, and its use has spread to English speaking nations such as the United States and the United Kingdom. Its growing popularity amongst statistical practitioners, and more recently those disciplines where the role of statistics is less dominant, demonstrates the importance of the continuing research and development of the methodology.
The aim of this paper is to highlight the theoretical, practical and computational issues of simple correspondence analysis and discuss its relationship with recent advances that can be used to graphically display the association in two-way categorical data.
