Members' attitudes and perceptions play a significant role in their behavior toward their organization and the performance of such organizations. This study examines the role of these “people” factors in a sample of fruit and vegetable growers' cooperatives in the Mid‐Atlantic United States. Although the Theory of Planned Behavior is used as the framework of analysis, the objective of this study was not to test the theory. Study findings provide additional insights into how cooperative members' beliefs and knowledge may shape their attitudes and the consequent behavior. Given the gradual decline of both cooperative memberships and the number of cooperatives in the United States and other countries, a good understanding of members' attitudes and behaviors is necessary because a cooperative's success may depend on it. Les attitudes et les perceptions des membres d'une coopérative jouent un rôle important dans le comportement envers l'organisme et la performance de ce dernier. La présente étude a examiné le rôle de ces facteurs ?humains? dans un échantillon de coopératives de producteurs de fruits et légumes dans les États du centre du littoral atlantique. Bien que la théorie du comportement axé sur un objectif ait été utilisée comme cadre d'analyse, l'objectif de l'étude ne consistait pas à tester la théorie. Les résultats de l'étude ont fourni des éclaircissements supplémentaires sur la façon dont les croyances et les connaissances des membres d'une coopérative peuvent façonner leurs attitudes et leur comportement subséquent. Compte tenu du déclin progressif du nombre de membres de coopérative et du nombre de coopératives aux États‐Unis et dans d'autres pays, il est important de bien comprendre les attitudes et les comportements des membres puisque le succès d'une coopérative peut en dépendre.  相似文献

Vertical coordination in the form of contracts and integration is common where changing consumer preferences require producers to adapt to changing market situations that require a steady supply of quality controlled products. We identify two vertical coordination mechanisms that are common in the real world but often ignored by the literature due to their inherent complexity. Using economic models, we measure the incentives and impact of market agents’ strategic behavior and strategies along a hypothetical food production-marketing chain. Our results reestablish the importance and value of open market and contracts in a world where both are gradually replaced by consolidation and integration. We also find that in most types of vertical coordination there is a critical limit to the levels of coordination beyond which it is not profitable to coordinate. We recommend that competitive policies could focus more on market structure where independent firms thrive rather than on the degree of coordination per se.  相似文献

This study examined predictors of households’ calorie demand using consumer expenditure survey data during the time frame of millennium development goals. It draws suggestions for achieving sustainable development goals to eliminate calorie-poverty. We used the log of per-capita calorie intake as the calorie demand. Endogeneity corrected quantile regression was applied to examine the distributional effect of predictors. Findings revealed calorie-monthly per-capita consumption expenditure (MPCE) elasticities were positively statistically significant across quantiles in rural-and urban-areas, but, contrary to traditional wisdom, elasticities are lower for calorie-poor than calorie-rich households. Dietary diversification of food items, relative food price, and share of medical-and education-expenditure were the main adverse drivers of calorie demand. Our results are robust to the under-reporting and measurement error. The policy implications are: (a) only focusing on pro-poor income enhancing strategies will not able to reduce calorie deprivation, it should be backed by imparting awareness about food choice and nutritional value of low price food items, (b) to implement necessary policy to maintain stable food inflation and effectively targeted food subsidy for calorie poor, (c) to adopt forward-looking medical-and education-policy such as free health and education facilities to all by enhancing public spending to revive the quality of public hospitals and educational institutions.

Vertical integration has become an important business strategy to respond to the needs of a consumer-driven marketing system. Although one of the perceived benefits of vertical ownership integration is improved profitability of the integrated firm, empirical literature mostly ignores this issue. Using a sample of U.S. food manufacturing industries, this study examines the impact of vertical mergers on profitability. Findings show that vertical mergers negatively impact profits. This may be due to the failure of vertical mergers to create differential advantages, such as cost savings, for the integrated firm.  相似文献

This paper computed oligopoly-induced allocative efficiency losses in 38 US food and tobacco manufacturing industries using conduct, demand and cost parameters estimated with a New Empirical Industrial Organisation (NEIO) approach. Allocative efficiency loss estimates in these industries amounted to $15.2 billion or over five per cent of sales for 1987. Statistical tests showed that these losses are generally higher than previous estimates, possibly due to the allowance of non-constant marginal costs and revised estimates of demand elasticities and conduct.  相似文献

Businesses participate in political activities, suchas campaign contributions and lobbying, to influencepublic policy formulation and implementation. Usinga sample of U.S. food manufacturing industries, thisstudy measures the welfare impact of corporatepolitical activities in those industries. Empiricalanalysis shows that rent seeking was imperfect andcorporate political activities were higher in thoseindustries that were highly concentrated, large inemployee size and sales, and deeper in debt.  相似文献

There is considerable consensus on the idea that Aristotelian virtue ethics advocates moral realism. In numerous works, the well-known business ethicist Edwin Hartman grapples with reconciling the unitary vision of life that a particular kind of moral realism advocates and the pluralist respect for diverse cultures and belief systems that comprise our world. This paper closely follows Hartman's efforts to reconcile his liberal values with his guarded support for Aristotelian moral realism. We argue that the realist interpretation of Aristotle's function argument can be employed to strengthen Hartman's critique of the concept of Homo economicus, which is often posited by its proponents and critics alike as the only viable position for a business manager. Drawing from Aristotle, the paper posits a novel notion of species-excellence as the ultimate telos of human life and an objective basis for a critique of Homo economicus.  相似文献

Based on the social norms and structural theories of social capital, this study examines the relationship between community social capital and the firms’ capital allocation efficiency. We hypothesize and find that the community social capital of a firm's headquarter area has a negative and statistically significant impact on its capital allocation inefficiency, which is robust to alternative proxies for community social capital and capital allocation inefficiency, propensity score matching and instrumental variable regressions. In addition, we find that the effect of community social capital is more pronounced for firms with poor internal ethical culture and weak network connections to outside executives and directors, implying that community social capital becomes important in these situations. This finding links prior social norms and networks literature to capital allocation studies in that the norms and networks components of community social capital discipline self-interested managers’ behavior and reduce information asymmetry-two channels of capital allocation efficiency. Overall, community social capital works as a compensatory monitoring and information transfer mechanism and improves the firms’ capital allocation efficiency.  相似文献
