Futures assessment by field anomaly relaxation : A review and appraisal

Futures research includes the problem of generating reasonably exhaustive and plausible scenarios for a given topic, a problem for which there are no truly satisfactory solutions. This article reviews and evaluates a method, field anomaly relaxation, first put forward some 20 years ago. The evaluation is in the context of an illustrative study of political developments in Europe. The research reconstructs and further develops the method and concludes that it has something to offer for scenario generation. Its weaknesses are identified and suggestions for further research are made.

Aggregation of Price Risk over Commodities: An Economic Index Number Approach

This article extends the economic theory of index numbers to the aggregation of price risk over commodities in production. Superlative indexes of aggregate price risk are related to Tornqvist and Fisher−type output quantity indexes. An application to major crops in Manitoba illustrates the empirical importance of the analysis.     

A Simple Duality Model of Production Incorporatin Risk Aversion and Price Uncertainty

Proceeding within the framework of a linear mean-variance utility function, this paper outlines a duality model of production that incorporates risk aversion and price uncertainty. In contrast to risk models based on an expected utility function, this model provides a practical alternative to standard duality models for econometric research.     

A systems approach to the management of a hospital for short-term patients.

The endemic problems of health system management are reviewed, as is the difficulty of taking a systems viewpoint. It is argued, and demonstrated, that, by using some very simple ideas of system structure it is remarkably easy to draw up a diagram of system influences. Such a diagram is drawn for the case of psychiatric patients who recycle in the system. The diagram is analyzed from the point of view of its properties as a feedback control system, and it is shown that there are alternative, and probably more satisfactory, management practices. Suggestions are made for the practical implementation of such policies. Finally it is argued that influence diagrams may be useful as agenda for discussions, and that they offer advantages over conventional agenda.

Religious identity in the workplace: A systematic review,research agenda,and practical implications

We conducted a systematic review of relevant literature to address how religious and occupational identities relate to each other in the workplace. We identified 53 relevant publications for analysis and synthesis. Studies addressed value differences associated with religion and occupation, identity tensions, unmet expectations, and the connection of religious identity to well-being and work outcomes. Key variables in the connection between religious and occupational identities included personal preferences, the fit between religious identity and job-related concerns, and the organization's policies, practices, and expectations. We highlight the personal and organizational consequences of being able to express religious identity at work and the conditions that promote high congruence between religious identity and its expression in the workplace. From these findings, we develop a research agenda and offer recommendations for management practice that focus on support for expression of religious identity at work while maintaining a broader climate of inclusion.
