Overreaction to stock market news and misevaluation of stock prices by unsophisticated investors: Evidence from the option market

This paper examines investors' option activity on value and growth stocks before earnings announcements. The main finding is that unsophisticated investors enter option positions that load up on growth stocks relative to value stocks in the days leading up to earnings announcements. This occurs despite the fact that at earnings announcements value stocks outperform growth stocks by a wide margin. The paper's results provide evidence that unsophisticated option market investors (1) overreact to past news on underlying stocks and (2) mistakenly believe that mispriced stocks will move even further away from fundamentals at impending scheduled news releases.     

US Foreign Direct Investment in East Asia: Strategy and Policy Issues

East Asian trade and investment policies have attracted US investment into the region, but these policies should be fine-tuned for the region to compete effectively for US investment inflow and increase their global share of US foreign direct investment. The changes should consider the needs of the US investors and East Asia's own economic development. Bilateral free trade agreements with the US are the likely channel for these changes, but the question is whether East Asia is ready for a comprehensive and deep liberalization. East Asia should work toward a regional investment policy framework to facilitate and expand the regional production network developed by the US foreign direct investment.     

Institutional mechanism for ASEAN-India cooperation: Trends and prospects

ASEAN's dynamic structural change and India's imminent economic liberalisation and deregulation are expected to further strengthen the ASEAN-India relations. A key component in this relationshiup is the institutional mechanism that can facilitate investment and trade flows, social and cultural exchanges and technical cooperation. To intensify these links, ASEAN has established a sectoral dialogue partnership with India in 1993, covering trade, investment and tourism areas. The framework for cooperation also provides for private sector representation. In view of this increasingly important relationship, ASEAN has agreed to upgrade India as a Full Dialogue Partner in 1995. Future changes and streamlining of the ASEAN institutional mechanism is expected to further facilitate and strengthen the ASEAN-India relatiionship.
