Si bien algunos estudios observan que las minorías étnicas urbanas en China perciben salarios más bajos que la mayoría han, otros no constatan la existencia de esa brecha. Para resolver esta contradicción, los autores proponen desglosar las experiencias laborales por grupo étnico minoritario. El análisis de las minorías étnicas sobre un amplio conjunto de datos indica que las «minorías foráneas», como los tibetanos y los grupos túrquicos, sufren una penalización salarial significativa cuando se controlan las covariables, pero no ocurre lo mismo con la totalidad de las minorías. Estas conclusiones son robustas en varias especificaciones y tienen importantes implicaciones teóricas y en materia de políticas.     

Nutrition Labels: An Exploratory Study of Consumer Reasons For Nonuse

Studies of consumer usage of nutrition labels required by the Food and Drug Administration have found that usage levels are low. A mailback survey of food shoppers in Madison, Wisconsin was conducted to determine who uses nutrition labels as well as reasons for nonuse. Multiple regression analysis revealed that compared to users, nonusers did not rate themselves as highly on nutrition knowledge, were less likely to plan meals in advance, and were not as highly educated. When asked why they did not use labels, most nonusers said they did not need them, and a sizable group reported their shopping practices pre-empt label usage. Nonusers also felt that a sample label had too much information. When asked to perform computations from sample label information, nonusers were less successful than users. The implications of these findings for nutrition education efforts are discussed.     

Capital Equalization and the Australian States

The Australian Grants Commission has recently considered ways to take account of differences in capital costs across States within the existing fiscal equalization formula. Here we develop a theoretical methodology for estimating differences in the costs of capital faced by the States in the General Government Sector. This methodology is used to generate preliminary estimates of State capital cost 'disabilities' from 1962–63 to 1995–96. Finally, we suggest how the methodology and the estimates of capital cost disabilities might be integrated into the Commission's formula to produce a grant distribution which reflects different costs of capital across States.     

EXOGENEITY IN A RECENT EXCHANGE RATE MODEL: A REPLY

In this note we show that the real exchange rate was indeed weakly exogenous in some of the specifications in MacDonald and Ricci (2004), but argue this was in all likelihood a function of the relatively limited degrees of freedom. We demonstrate here that by increasing the degrees of freedom, we can satisfy the weak exogeneity condition, whilst at the same time producing equilibrium estimates of the Rand which are quantitatively and qualitatively the same as those reported in MacDonald and Ricci (2004).
