Germany today is experiencing the strongest upsurge of right‐wing populism since the second world war, most notably with the rise of Pegida and Alternative für Deutschland. Yet wealthy global cities like Hamburg continue to present themselves as the gatekeepers of liberal progress and cosmopolitan openness. This article argues that Hamburg's urban boosterism relies on, while simultaneously obscuring, the same structures of racial violence that embolden reactionary movements. Drawing on the work of Walter Benjamin and Allan Pred, we present an archaeology of Hamburg's landscape, uncovering some of its ‘spaces of danger’—sites layered with histories of violence, many of which lie buried and forgotten. We find that these spaces, when they become visible, threaten to undermine Hamburg's cosmopolitan narrative. They must, as a result, be continually erased or downplayed in order to secure the city as an attractive site for capital investment. To illustrate this argument, we give three historical examples: Hamburg's role in the Hanseatic League during the medieval and early modern period; the city under the Nazi regime; and the recent treatment of Black African refugees. The article's main contribution is to better situate issues of historical landscape, collective memory and racialized violence within the political economy of today's global city.  相似文献

The state of war is a popular metaphor employed by many business writers seeking to explain the imperatives of strategic decision-making. It is a metaphor which draws on a realist characterisation of war as a Hobbesian state of nature devoid of a moral dimension. However, the work of Walzer (1977) has demonstrated that rules of war, established over generations and across cultural divides, play a significant role in the conduct of warfare. Through identifying and analysing rules of war in parallel with ethical dilemmas in business life, such as whistleblowing, it is possible to develop a more sophisticated understanding of the war metaphor in place of simplified, state of nature realism. This alternative version of the war metaphor is a useful means of introducing students to Aristotlean virtues as well as challenging their preconceptions about the nature of business activity.  相似文献

This paper proposes a methodology for quantifying the relative bias inherent in various farm sampling frames. It can be applied to any area or region for which a significant sample of farms is required. A random survey examined the relative representativeness of selected farm characteristics by National Farmers' Union of Scotland (NFUS) and Scottish Landowners' Federation (SLF) membership lists, the British Telecom Yellow Pages farm business listings, and the Scottish Office Agriculture and Fisheries Department June census returns on farm holdings. It is suggested that a methodology to assess comparative bias should be employed prior to any extensive work requiring the use of a sampling frame for farm holdings or businesses, to ensure that the most appropriate framework is chosen and a greater understanding of research findings achieved.  相似文献

This paper traces the evolution of marketing thought in the United States and Russia and advances the argument that the marketing concept is not unique to free-market systems. Rather the acceptance and application of the marketing concept seems inevitable in any society which advances to the point where it has: (1) a high degree of specialization and division of labor in production, (2) a reward system based on generalized purchasing power, i.e., money, and (3) significant amounts of discretionary income in the hands of consumers. The paper presents a rationale for the inclusion of a learning log within a business ethics programme drawing on the results of a pilot with a group of undergraduate students. Learning logs were found to serve as a valuable means of helping students connect theory with familiar working practice and also enabled them to reflect on their own personal development and understanding of ethics over time. Comparison between the first and final log entries indicate that students were able to critically re-evaluate many of their initial assumptions about business ethics. While the first log entries were characterised by scepticism and relativist attitudes to business ethics, the final entry indicated that many students now rejected the notion that ethics are only relevant to private life. Moreover, there was evidence of increased understanding of the scope of ethical issues and the complexity of decision-making. Critical workplace incidents, reported in the third log entry, illustrated a wide range of ethical dilemmas facing young and inexperienced service workers. Integrating the use of such critical incidents, written from the perspective of a front-line worker, within a business ethics programme may also serve as a valuable counter-weight to the traditional emphasis on large corporate case studies which cast students in the role of a middle or senior manager.  相似文献

Although merchant shipping is one of our major industries, there has hitherto been little study of labour relations on board ship. This personal account of social and industrial relationships amongst the deck crew of the Queen Elizabeth provides a basis for future research.  相似文献
