Does Competitive Behavior not Mean Lower Prices? Impact of Growing Demand and Limited Seat Availability in Asia-Pacific Commercial Aviation Industry

This article explores the airline industry where passengers are heterogeneous in their willingness to pay and markets are capacity constrained. Contrary to conventional wisdom, theauthor find that more intense competition can result in higher prices and a lower aggregate supply. It is shown that the price of the seat with a lower profit margin-per-unit capacity may be higher when there is a smaller number of companies in competition. It is also shown that total supply of business class seats may be reduced when there are more firms in competition. These phenomena occur because of how competition affects airlines’ seat capacity allocation among products. Interactions between competition and seat capacity constraints are nontrivial including nonmonotonic relationships.     

The relationship between tourism,CO2 emissions and economic growth: a case of Mediterranean countries

This study explores the impact of tourism on economic growth considering CO₂ emissions utilizing panel data techniques for a sample of Mediterranean countries. The cointegration tests reveal that there is a positive long-run equilibrium between tourism, CO₂ emissions and economic growth. This positive long-run relationship may suggest that tourism increases the level of CO₂ emissions and has a statistically significant impact on economic growth in Mediterranean countries. Emirmahmutoglu and Kose (2011. Testing for Granger causality in heterogeneous mixed panels. Economic Modelling, 28(3), 870–876.) test results reveal that the tourism-led growth hypothesis, which suggests that tourism contributes to economic growth, is valid for Egypt, Italy, and Spain. Additionally, there exists a bidirectional relationship between tourism and economic growth both in Morocco and Turkey.

Allocating Capacity Among Quality Differentiated Products: Evidence From Airline Industry

Prior analytical literature has shown that the capacity-allocation decisions depend on the quality differentiation and the resource consumptions of products. However, there has been no empirical investigation on this topic in vertically differentiated markets. In this article, the authors investigate the airline industry in three regions of the world; Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East, and Africa, and North America. They explore how the customer perceived quality and the resource-consumption differences of the products may affect the capacity-allocation decisions. They find that both attributes have a significant impact in all the regions, yet at a different scale in each region.

Green technological diversification of European ICT firms: a patent-based analysis

ABSTRACT

This paper investigates whether and how diversified firms in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector innovate in green technologies and assess the potential impact of these innovations on firm performance. The analysis relies on a balanced panel dataset of European ICT firms in the period 2009–2013. The results suggest an inverted u-shaped relationship between the extent of technological diversification and the likelihood to develop green technologies. Technological diversification generally increases the likelihood of green innovations, but too high a dispersion of resources across a large variety of different technologies decreases the intensity of green innovations. The results show also that the development of green technologies is positively associated with firm performance: ICT firms involved in green patenting activity perform better than ICT firms with no green patents.     

Reactions of dissatisfied investors: exit,voice or loyalty

This study examines the reactions of individual investors that have invested in the stocks of companies that have been eventually delisted from the stock market due to bankruptcy and/or bad governance. Data to determine reaction styles of investors are collected through a well-established questionnaire to a sample of 67 investors of Borsa Istanbul. Multinomial logistic regression analysis concludes that investors’ perceived knowledge about the stock market is the most important factor affecting how investors react. More specifically, the higher the knowledge perceived, the higher the tendency of the investors to keep investing (loyalty) as the reaction. Further, more experienced investors are found to complain/ask for their rights (voice) more.
