Liquidity Considerations in Estimating Implied Volatility

Option markets have significant variation in liquidity across different option series. Illiquidity reduces the informativeness of the price. Price information for illiquid options is more noisy, and thus the implied volatilities (IVs) based on these prices are more noisy. In this study, we propose weighting schemes to estimate IV, which reduce the importance attached to illiquid options. The two indexes using liquidity weights are SVIX, which is a spread‐adjusted volatility index, and TVVIX, which is a traded volume weighted VIX. We find SVIX outperforms TVVIX, the conventional schemes such as the traditional VXO, or vega weights, and volatility elasticity weights. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Political implications of a look-out institution

The rapid institutionalisation of futures research is making it an increasingly political affair. Dr Starling explores the politics of futures research from several institutional perspectives, and favours an establishment linked with the policy-making process on a governmental level. The potential implications of the look-out institution's connections with the administration, the legislature and the political organisations are discussed, and its function of “freeing the political imagination” is defined.     

Psychological safety climate and workplace bullying in Vietnam’s public sector

The bureaucratic and impersonal nature of public management can fertilize workplace bullying and risks for psychological health and safety. Psychological safety climate (PSC) is an important indicator to reduce psychological hazards. Yet, there have been few studies conducted to examine the existence of PSC in the public sector in non-Western economies. This study examined the implementation of PSC and its effects on 274 employees from six branches of a Vietnamese public sector organization. The results suggest that senior management in organizations should consider positive work conditions and an effective system of policies, procedures, and practices for the prevention of psychosocial hazards.     

Perceived usefulness,ease of use and user acceptance of blockchain technology for digital transactions – insights from user-generated content on Twitter

Although blockchain has attracted a great deal of attention from academia and industry there is a lack of studies on acceptance drivers. This study explores blockchain acceptance by mining the collective intelligence of users on Twitter. It maps blockchain user acceptance drivers to technology acceptance constructs. The analysis shows that users are attracted by security, privacy, transparency, trust and traceability aspects provided by blockchain. On Twitter more discussions on blockchain benefits than on drawbacks. Initial coin offering (ICO) is extensively discussed. The study provides guidelines for managers and concludes by presenting the limitations of the study along with future research directions.     

Profits and politics: Coordinating technology adoption in agriculture

This paper examines the political economy of government-led coordination of economic activity in a simple two-sector model in which individuals' choice of agricultural technology affects industrialization. We demonstrate the existence of multiple equilibria; the economy is either characterized by the use of a traditional agricultural technology and a low level of industrialization or the use of a mechanized technology and a high level of industrialization. Relative to the traditional technology, use of the mechanized technology increases output but leaves some population groups worse off. We show that the distributional implications of choosing the mechanized technology restrict the possibility of Pareto-improving coordination by an elected policy-maker, even when we allow for income redistribution.     

Empirical linkages between good governance and national well-being

This paper brings together the largest available sets of national-level data, covering 157 countries over the years 2005–2012, to assess the extent to which governance quality contributes to life evaluations. Our most significant new finding is that changes in governance quality within a policy-relevant time horizon can lead to significant changes in the quality of life. For example, the ten most-improved countries, in terms of changes in government service delivery quality between 2005 and 2012, when compared to the ten most-worsened countries, are estimated to have average life evaluations higher by 0.4 points on a 0 to 10 scale. The results also confirm earlier findings that service delivery quality generally dominates democratic quality in supporting better lives until delivery quality has reached sufficient levels. The situation changes as development proceeds, with democratic quality showing a positive influence among countries that have already achieved higher quality of service delivery.     

The Delphi technique and the forecasting of specific fringe benefits

The value of the Delphi technique is its ability to forecast the possible occurrence of events in the future. In 1981, a follow-up study was completed of an original Delphi study that was conducted in 1976. The basis of the 1981 study was to check the accuracy of the forecast made by school professionals on the future of specific fringe benefits in public education.
