The ability of new product development (NPD) teams to generate ideas and develop high‐quality concepts for new products is a crucial determinant of NPD success. Although prior research in this area has developed various interventions to enhance the ability of teams to generate ideas, such interventions have limited impact on innovation management theory and practice. Partly, this is because of practical reasons: The interventions are often costly and impractical. However, there are also more fundamental, theoretical issues regarding these interventions: Knowledge of which interventions are effective in what situations is lacking. Even more importantly, there is no theory (or empirical evidence) about the effects of these interventions on the success of developing initial ideas into concepts. Together, this has caused the usefulness of these interventions for NPD teams to be uncertain at best. To remedy this situation, this study focuses on a costless and easy‐to‐implement intervention: suspending group debate. Suspending group debate refers to a team idea generation and concept development process in which groups debate a problem, ideas for solutions are generated individually, and these ideas are debated and developed into concepts collectively. The authors developed a new theory about the impact of suspending group debate on idea generation and on further concept development. Specifically, they argue that suspending group debate causes groups to generate a higher number of ideas, a higher number of original ideas, and a more diverse set of ideas, but that only the number of original ideas and the diversity of the set of ideas will translate into higher concept quality. The authors also developed new theory about when suspending group debate is especially effective. Specifically, they argue that suspending group debate is especially effective when at least one group member is low on extraversion. This theory is tested using an experimental design in which groups generated ideas and developed concepts for a specific organizational problem. Some groups suspend group debate, while others do not. Results show that suspending group debate indeed causes groups to generate a higher number of ideas, a higher number of original ideas, and a more diverse set of ideas. Importantly, results demonstrate that the effects of suspending group debate are more pronounced for groups with one or more group members that are low on extraversion. Furthermore, suspending group debate also affects concept quality, mediated by the number of original ideas and the diversity of ideas that groups generate (and thus not by the sheer number of ideas generated). Specifically, results show that both the diversity of the idea set as well as the number of original ideas positively influence the innovativeness of the final concept, while only the diversity of the idea set influences the comprehensiveness of the final concept.  相似文献

The Evolution and Nature of Young Firm Networks: a longitudinal Perspective   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
This paper describes the evolution of networks during the first three years after start-up and puts forward explanations of the nature of networks of young firms after three years. We extend current research on networks by explicitly including both temporal change and spatial variation in our analyses of the longitudinal dataset. In this paper we define networks as: the main business relationships with respect to sales, supply, outsourcing and cooperation. The nature of these business relationships is specified by four main characteristics: type, number, source, and location. The longitudinal network analysis is therefore at the micro-level: the individual young firm and the characteristics of its most important business contacts are central. In contrast to the literature our analyses show that sales relationships become increasingly social in source during the first three years after start-up. We also find a persistent geographical concentration strategy in the main business relationships. It seems that extra-regional relationships are losing ground to intra-regional relationships over time: firms are narrowing their spatial scope in their first three years. In addition, we trace important effects of gender, education, innovative firm behaviour, region and sector on the nature of young firm networks three years after start-up.  相似文献

In antiquity coins were struck by placing a heated coin blank between two dies and hitting the upper die with a heavy blow of a hammer. When a die wore off, a new one was engraved. So dies intended to be the same show small differences that may be observed on extant coins as "the varieties". Numismatists collect statistics of die varieties in as large a sample as possible of extant coins of a single issue they can find to study. From these statistics they want to estimate the number of dies used in producing the coin issue. To do this they need a parametric stochastic model describing how coins survive and become part of the sample. Several models are tried and tested against the data of two large samples, one of them new. (Few large samples exist). Estimators are reviewed and some related statistical problems studied.  相似文献

Crowdsourcing platforms are online organizations that organize work by sourcing tasks to their members. As participation on crowdsourcing platforms is completely voluntary, getting members to actively participate in tasks on an ongoing basis is essential for the survival of these online platforms. Why members would be active on an ongoing basis, however, is currently not well understood. To understand ongoing member activity on crowdsourcing platforms, we build on the group engagement model, which postulates that feelings of pride and respect influence engagement because they foster identification with the group. We argue that, although in general the nature of crowdsourcing platforms limits the effects of identification processes on member behaviour, feelings of pride and respect will still play central roles in such online organizations, because feelings of pride and respect can directly drive members’ cooperative behaviors towards the platform organization. Moreover, we posit that the way in which platform organizations communicate with their members affects these feelings of pride and respect. We test these ideas in a longitudinal, multisource field study and find that feelings of pride drive ongoing member activity on an online crowdsourcing platform directly and that platform management can increase members’ feelings of pride and respect by engaging in specific organizational communication practices.  相似文献

Despite a surge of studies examining the role of social capital in the entrepreneurial process, no quantitative assessments exist of the empirical evidence to date. To resolve seemingly conflicting results, we conducted a meta-analysis of the link between entrepreneurs' personal networks and small firm performance and identify new moderators affecting this relationship. Analyses of 61 independent samples indicated that the social capital–performance link was positive and significant (rc = .211). Effect sizes of weak ties were smaller than those of structural holes, while network diversity had the largest positive effect on performance. Results also showed that the social capital–performance link depends on the age of small firms, the industry and institutional contexts in which they operate, and on the specific network or performance measures used. Based on these findings, we develop recommendations for future research on the contingent value of social capital for small firms.  相似文献

Summary Two random samples of size n are taken from a set containing N objects of H types, first with and then without replacement. Let d be the absolute (L1-)distance and I the K ullback -L eibler information distance between the distributions of the sample compositions without and with replacement. Sample composition is meant with respect to types; it does not matter whether order of sampling is included or not. A bound on I and d is derived, that depends only on n, N, H. The bound on I is not higher than 2 I. For fixed H we have d 0, I 0 as N if and only if n/N 0. Let W r be the epoch at which for the r-th time an object of type I appears. Bounds on the distances between the joint distributions of W 1., W r without and with replacement are given.  相似文献

Do firm entry and exit improve the competitiveness of regions? If so, is this a universal mechanism or is it contingent on the type of industry or region in which creative destruction takes place? This paper analyses the effect of firm entry and exit on the competitiveness of regions, as measured by total factor productivity (TFP) growth. Based on a study across 40 regions in the Netherlands over the period 1988–2002, we find that firm entry is related to productivity growth in services, but not in manufacturing. The positive impact found in services does not necessarily imply that new firms are more efficient than incumbent firms; high degrees of creative destruction may also improve the efficiency of incumbent firms. We also find that the impact of firm dynamics on regional productivity in services is higher in regions exhibiting diverse but related economic activities.  相似文献

According to the knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship, knowledge created endogenously results in knowledge spillovers, which allow independent entrepreneurs to identify and exploit opportunities (Acs et al. in Small Bus Econ 32(1):15–30, 2009). The knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship ignores entrepreneurial activities of employees within established organizations. This ignorance is largely empirical, because there has been no large-scale study on the prevalence and nature of entrepreneurial employee activities. This article presents the outcomes of the first large-scale international study of entrepreneurial employee activities. In multiple advanced capitalist economies, entrepreneurial employee activity is more prevalent than independent entrepreneurial activity. Innovation indicators are positively correlated with the prevalence of entrepreneurial employee activities, but are not or even negatively correlated with the prevalence of independent entrepreneurial activities.  相似文献
