Who are the world's most successful companies?

It seems that everybody wants to know which companies are the most successful. To help throw light on the issue, and to do so more reliably than the plethora of league tables and charts produced by most business magazines, the London Business School have teamed up with The Economist to compile an assessment of the top performers of the 1980's.

Is advertising rational?

Advertising is not a process by which gullible consumers are persuaded to buy things they don't want, according to the authors of this paper. Instead, it furnishes consumers with some useful information. It is not so much the claims made by advertisers that are helpful, but the fact that they are willing to spend extravagant amounts of money on a product that is informative. The authors find tentative evidence for this view of advertising and discuss its implications.     

Introducing experiment in pedestrian behaviour and risk perception study at urban level crossing

Given the high risk of severe accidents at level crossings (LCs), this study examined legal and illegal crossings by pedestrians and cyclists at a high-traffic LC in Zagreb, Croatia. Survey data and field observations were collected to identify reasons for risky behaviour. Behaviour was observed under normal conditions and in the presence of various safety measures in order to identify measures that can reduce risky behaviour. Results show that the presence of police officer at the LC was most effective at reducing illegal crossings, while the presence of cameras contributes significantly as well, especially after safety educational campaign when illegal crossing decreases for 59.23%. We can assume that in future the improvement regarding human behaviour on LC could be made with cameras on LC and more frequent educational campaigns. This is the first reported use of field survey and video surveillance methods to analyse user behaviour at LCs in Croatia.     

苏南镇域企业空间集聚问题实证研究

本文以镇域和村域空间作为研究对象地域,试对苏南地区乡镇企业的空间集聚问题进行探讨。研究结果表明,经过20世纪90年代的调整、改制,素以“苏南模式”而著称的苏南乡镇企业的内涵发生了巨大变革。通过村办企业的总体衰退、镇办企业的规模扩大,实现镇域企业的空间集聚,是目前苏南乡镇企业发展的重要特征,这也就为苏南地区城镇化的进一步发展奠定了坚实的基础。

Measuring the Performance of Banks

Banks do not publish accounts in quite the same way as other companies, and nor should they. But they should not be immune to conventional standards of performance ranking and evaluation. This companion piece to Business Strategy Review articles on measuring company performance applies some performance benchmarking to a sample of European Banks. The result: they must do better.
