The study reported here compared the influences of psychological constructs (job demands and scheduling control) and objective work characteristics (shiftwork, night‐work and hospital department type) on job satisfaction, organisational commitment, burnout and withdrawal intentions. Our hypothesis was that psychological constructs have a higher influence on work‐related attitudes than objective characteristics of work schedules. In addition to the main effects, we proposed an interactive hypothesis: poor attitudes would result from high demands and low control rather than from other combinations of both psychological variables. Using a sample of 153 hospital nurses in Israel, the hypotheses were generally supported. As night‐work, shiftwork and working in intensive care units are unavoidable characteristics of the modern medical environment, these findings are meaningful for improving the personal adjustment of hospital nurses. 相似文献
Summary We consider the problem of making inferences about the parameters of a time series model when there is the possibility of a discrete variance change at an unknown time point. For this we obtain the posterior distributions of the parameters and of the variance ratio. 相似文献
The finite element method was used in this study to investigate cutoff walls and downstream filters to control seepage, the exit hydraulic gradient, and uplift forces for dams. Experimental data was used for validating the numerical modelling. The effective parameters are the length of filter and its distance downstream from the dam, the depth of the cutoff walls, the upstream dam head, and the thickness of alluvial foundation. The results show that by increasing filter length, the exit hydraulic gradient, uplift force, and seepage are reduced. The optimum relative length of the filter is L/H?=?0.028 which results in a decrease of about 65% in the exit hydraulic gradient, a 35% decrease in seepage and 10% reduction in the uplift force at the upstream foundation and a 60% decrease in the uplift force at the downstream foundation. Increase of cutoff wall depth reduces the exit hydraulic gradient, uplift force, and seepage. Using two cutoff walls both upstream and downstream of the dam decreases seepage, hydraulic gradient, and uplift force 132%, 450% and 11% respectively. However, using an upstream cutoff and downstream filter decreases seepage, hydraulic gradient, and uplift force by 180%, 490%, and 119% respectively. Thus, based on this study, recommendations for suitable combinations of upstream cutoff and downstream filter are provided.
U.S. Labor Law currently allows employers whose work forces are unionized to introduce new technologies without bargaining over the decision to do so. This forces unions to adopt inefficient strategies when negotiating collective bargaining agreements in an effort to minimize the impact of technological change on their members. Allowing unions to bargain over the decision to introduce new technologies would obviate their having to resort to these inefficient strategies. In addition, it might increase the likelihood of employees suggesting alterations in production processes that would increase the rate of technological change. For these reasons, this article advocates amending U.S. labor law to require employers to bargain over the introduction of new technologies.相似文献
Neuman, Yoram, Abraham Pizam and Arie Reichel, Values as Determinants of Motivation: Tourism and Other Career Choices. Annals of Tourism Research 1980, VII (3): 428–442. This study examined the predictive validity of work values in explaining motivational patterns of three groups of career preparation differing in their occupational specificity: Tourism/Hospitality, Management, and Liberal Arts. It was found that the higher the occupational specificity of a career preparation the higher is the predictive validity of work values in explaining work motivations. As predicted, the best relationships between values and motivation was found in the maximally specified occupation, namely: tourism/hospitality students, followed by management students with the liberal arts students — the most flexible occupational group — having the lowest relationship between values and motivation. The implications of the findings for employee selection and motivation prediction in the tourism/hospitality industry are discussed. 相似文献
The “alternative”, “atypical” or “informal” workforce has grown in developed and developing countries alike. One of the more recent evolutions of informal employment has been of informal employment within formal enterprises. In the interest of flexibility and cost‐reduction, many formal firms increasingly resort to hiring workers on a temporary or informal basis. Alongside, and perhaps, as a result of the persistence and pervasiveness of informal employment, issues relating to inequality have come to the fore. This paper is motivated by these two intertwining aspects of Indian labor market—informality and wage inequality. Using nationally representative sample data, the paper examines trends in wage inequality among various forms of informal workers, overlaying these findings with broader trends in inequality. Using a regression based inequality decomposition, the paper compares the sources of wage inequality across different employment groups and the reasons for differences in wage inequality. 相似文献
In this study, we examined the role of guanxi as entrepreneurs’ resource-obtaining mechanism in private sector firms, using a data-set of 184 publicly listed firms in China. We found that guanxi indeed played a positive role that helped private sector firms gain easier access to resources. We also found that guanxi exerted even a greater positive effect on private sector firms’ resource obtaining compared to entrepreneurs’ political participation, due to being the lifeblood of business conduct and social interaction in Chinese culture. 相似文献
We analyze the contents of print ads in the motion picture industry (e.g., number of reviews quoted in the ad, the presence of a top reviewer, size of the ad, star, director, etc.). We find that external validation (a recommendation by a top reviewer) is more important to revenues than the informative content of the ad. 相似文献
Usury is a concept often associated more with religiously based financial ethics, whether Christian or Islamic, than with
the secular world of contemporary finance. The problem is compounded by a tendency to interpret riba, prohibited within Islam, as both usury and interest, without adequately distinguishing these concepts. This paper argues
that in Christian tradition usury has always evoked the notion of money demanded in excess of what is owed on a loan, disrupting
a relationship of equality between people, whereas interest was seen as referring to just compensation to the lender. Although
it is often claimed that hostility towards ‘usury’ has been in retreat in the West since the protestant Reformation, we would
argue that the crucial break came not with Calvin, but with Jeremy Bentham, whose critique of the arguments of Adam Smith,
upholding the reasonableness of the laws against usury, led to the abolition of the usury laws in England in 1854. There has
to be a role for law, whether Islamic or secular, in regulating financial relationships. We argue that by retrieving the necessary
distinction between demanding usury as illegitimate predatory lending and interest as legitimate compensation, we can discover
common ground behind the driving principles of financial ethics within both Islamic and Christian tradition that may still
be of relevance today. By re-examining past ethical discussions of the distinction between usury and just compensation, we
argue that the world’s religious traditions can make significant contributions to contemporary debate.
