SK进军美国虚拟运营市场

2005年,韩国信息产业面临着政策、牌照、技术融合、运营模式等诸多热点,移动虚拟电信运营(MVNO)继前几年在国内引起较多讨论之后,便一直处于外热内冷的局面。尽管业界形成的基本共识是虚拟电信运营的未来将会多姿多彩,而且结合国外实践经验和国内市场环境来看,虚拟电信运营也大有可为,但是究竟到何时才能发展壮大并成为产业链中不可缺少的一环,还存在不少争议。国内虚拟电信运营商的身份问题也始终尘埃未定。在欧美市场,虚拟电信运营已经发展成较为成熟的产业,远有英国著名的维珍公司,近日又有韩国SK电讯联合美国著名的互联网服务提供商EarthLink开拓美国虚拟运营市场,据悉这还是亚洲电信运营商(MNO)首次在全美开辟移动通信服务市场,并且是移动虚拟网络运营。从SK电讯等成功者的经验来看待虚拟电信运营市场的发展,完全有助于国内虚拟电信运营的参与者们共同迎接中国虚拟电信运营时代的来临。     

Transdisciplinary research partnerships: making research happen!

Health care professionals are expected to do more with less. Partnerships can be formed to gather information for research. Numerous opportunities exist for health care professionals to work with students in a wide variety of disciplines. Forming partnerships can result in a win-win situation for all involved.     

Further thoughts on simplicity and complexity in population projection models

"This article is a review of--and response to--a special issue of Mathematical Population Studies that focused on the relative performance of simpler vs. more complex population projection models. I do not attempt to summarize or comment on each of the articles in the special issue, but rather present an additional perspective on several points: definitions of simplicity and complexity, empirical evidence regarding population forecast accuracy, the costs and benefits of disaggregation, the potential benefits of combining forecasts, criteria for evaluating projection models, and issues of economic efficiency in the production of population projections."     

Use of the prostate specific antigen (P.S.A.) in early detection of prostate cancer in males over the age of 50

A total of 469 males over the age of 50 years were tested by the prostate specific antigen (PSA) with follow-up evaluations on those that exceeded 4.0 ng/ml. Thirty six (7.7 percent) of the participants had abnormal results, 23 (63.9 percent) had abnormal digital rectal examinations (DRE) and had biopsies done. Ten of the 23 biopsied participants had positive findings of prostate malignancy and 16 participants had benign prostatic hyperplasia. Three participants with abnormal PSA had negative DRE and no evidence of malignancy by ultrasound. Based on age-specific reference ranges, only one positive biopsy would have been missed while five of the 16 males who had negative biopsies would not have had to undergo this procedure. This would have resulted in a significant savings of medical costs as well as undue worry by the patient.
