Marketing channels are among the most important elements of any value chain. This is because the bulk of a nation's manufacturing output flows through them. The intermediaries (e.g., distributors, wholesalers, retailers) constituting marketing channels perform specific distribution functions, such as transportation, storage, sales, financing, and relationship building, better than most manufacturers. Over his distinguished career, Louis P. Bucklin investigated many questions about the structuring and functioning of marketing channels using conceptual, empirical, and microeconomics model-based methodologies. Today, the academic marketing literature contains hundreds of articles that have employed these three broad classes of methodologies to investigate issues of channel intermediaries’ interorganizational relationships, for example, power-dependence, relational outcomes, conflict and negotiations, and manufacturing firms’ channel strategy, for example, channel structure, selection, coordination and control. So far, however, there has been no review of how the three different methodologies have contributed to advancing knowledge across this set of channels research domains. This paper is the first that aims to (1) chart how channels research employing each of the three classes of methodologies – conceptual, empirical, microeconomics model-based – has evolved over seven decades along with current trends; (2) review the contributions and shortcomings of research to date using these methodologies; and (3) suggest future research opportunities using these methodologies, separately or in an integrated fashion.  相似文献

There has been a proliferation of contributions about transdisciplinarity during the last decade. Today transdisciplinarity is known and referenced in the natural and social sciences, and the humanities, as well as numerous professions. Hence it is appropriate to take stock of what has been achieved in both education and research during the last 10 years. These achievements include development of conceptual and analytical frameworks, a diversification of methods and approaches in precise localities, specific cases showing the creative, reflexive and transformative capacity of transdisciplinary inquiry, and concerns about the asymmetries of power and control of participants during processes of the co-production of knowledge. However, conceptual and institutional barriers for transdisciplinary inquiry are still common whereas incentives remain rare. This is not only due to the scepticism of decision makers in academic institutions, in conventional funding agencies and in policy decision making but also to the formal education and personal motives of scientific researchers in academic institutions.  相似文献

This article analyzes academic research from the International Journal of Hospitality Management (IJHM), as it applies to the dimensions of the management process related to the Research Methodologies proposed by Ritchie [1987. Roles of Research in Tourism Management. In: Ritchie, J.R.B, Goeldner, C. (Eds.), Travel, Tourism, and Hospitality Research. Wiley, New York, pp. 13–22]. This analysis provides insight on the evolution of research published in the IJHM from 2000 to 2005 and compares the results with previous studies. The IJHM has evolved in to an empirical journal with highly sophisticated methodologies and procedures. Therefore, the intention of this article is to provide a vision of the current research efforts in hospitality while providing a better contextual understanding of the directions and trends in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.  相似文献

Seventy years after its postwar inception, the field of international business–government relations (IBGR) is rich in new concepts, typologies, theories and methodologies that have broadly reflected the three post-WWII periods of Confrontation, Accommodation and Competition. This analysis discusses the correspondence between these “new terms” and IBGR practice during each one of these periods which have continuously brought up new actors, issues and ideologies whose study keeps growing in quantity if not always in quality. It concludes with what can be anticipated regarding the international relations between business and governments in a future marked by much greater political disorder and less economic multilateralism as well as by nonmarket strategies that may remain localized.  相似文献
