Cross-sectional data are compiled from the 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2012 World Bank Living Standards Measurement Study databases for Albania. Based on responses from 1169 firms, the entrepreneurs’ kinship networks are found to influence firm activity in a positive and negative way. The positive contribution occurs through employment, be it formal or informal. The persisting impact of the kinship networks fades away, and business and friendship networks have gained importance in recent years. 相似文献

This paper uses comparable income aggregates from 41 national household surveys from 22 countries to explore the patterns of income generation among rural households in Sub-Saharan Africa, and to compare household income strategies in Sub-Saharan Africa with those in other regions. The paper seeks to understand how geography drives these strategies, focusing on the role of agricultural potential and distance to urban areas. Specialization in on-farm activities continues to be the norm in rural Africa, practiced by 52 percent of households (as opposed to 21 percent of households in other regions). Regardless of distance and integration in the urban context, when agro-climatic conditions are favorable, farming remains the occupation of choice for most households in the African countries for which the study has geographically explicit information. However, the paper finds no evidence that African households are on a different trajectory than households in other regions in terms of transitioning to non-agricultural based income strategies. 相似文献

This paper analyses the impact of the economic growth in Cote d'Ivoire on the poor people. We use household data from two LSMS (1992 and 2002) led by the National Statistical Office of Côte d'Ivoire. We show that the situation in this country is characterized by a trickle‐down growth: the poverty growth curve and the growth incidence curve computed show that growth reduces poverty but the poor people receive proportionally fewer benefits than the non‐poor. 相似文献

Using data from the 1993 and 1998 Nicaraguan Living Standards Measurement Survey, this paper analyses the desirability of self-employment for Nicaraguan men and women over two points in time in a changing economic environment characterized by market-based reforms called the New Economic Model. Switching regressions of the self-employed and waged and salaried sectoral choice suggest that experience is the major determinant of self-employment for both Nicaraguan men and women. Mixed findings are reported for sectoral selection suggesting that the self-employed men, depending upon current economic conditions, may alternate back and forth between the sector (self-employment or waged and salaried employment) with the highest returns. For women, improvement in economic conditions reflected negative selection in both sectors suggesting that much of the economic gains in the 1990s accrued to men. 相似文献
