Using ethnographic interviews and Greimasian semiotics, this study explores second-generation ethnic consumers’ perceptions of physical shopping environments from a cultural identity perspective. It reveals how second-generation ethnic consumers make decisions about where to shop for cosmetics. The key results reveal the identity dimensions of shopping behaviour that retail stores wanting to target second-generation ethnic consumers must take into consideration.  相似文献

The complex issues of conservation, politics, tourism management and ownership have emerged as critical issues within the World Heritage debate and specifically within heritage tourism research. Within this context, this paper focuses on issues of ownership and belonging and argues that there exists a link between the conceptual inconsistencies inherent in the World Heritage idea and the tensions between the national and the ‘universal’ evident at a number of World Heritage Sites. That is, heritage sites that are deemed to be of ‘outstanding universal value’ and are bestowed with the World Heritage accolade are consequently no longer expected to be perceived as symbols of particular national identities, but as heritage belonging to all humankind. This, of course, provokes a series of debates over the issues of ownership and belonging of such heritage, namely between the national and the ‘universal’ suggesting that it is possible to perceive World Heritage as synonymous with contested heritage. The paper explores these issues of ownership and focuses on the Acropolis, symbol of the World Heritage idea, as a case study utilising an exploratory semiotic analysis of the promotional material released by the Greek National Tourism Organisation over the last five years.  相似文献

This paper highlights the contributions of sociosemiotically informed multimodal research in framing and systematically interpreting experiential consumption phenomena. By dint of tried and tested sociosemiotic mappings of cultural practices, consumer researchers may benefit considerably by following available avenues for the modal segmentation of cultural practices, inasmuch as by methodically yielding stratified accounts of experiences in terms of configurations that comprise metafunctions, modes and semiotic resources. As argued throughout this paper, the pursuit of a sociosemiotic avenue in cultural consumer research allows for comparisons across studies, of seamlessness and of maximal integration across different analytical/interpretive levels, thus constituting a potentially indispensable device for modeling consumption experiences.  相似文献

This article introduces a conceptual model for the analysis of tourism marketing texts, and provides a social semiotic reading of the Visit Cornwall brochure to demonstrate how the model may be applied. The conceptual model provides an insight into how the cultural meaning of tourism moves from culturally constituted world of tourism marketing, to that of the individual consumer. By understanding how individuals interpret marketing texts, and how they relate to the signs and images used within tourism marketing, it is possible to develop coherent strategies that are tailored to market segments or groups, while identifying the significance, ethics, and validity of the discourses utilized within contemporary tourism marketing practices.  相似文献

旅游符号学应用研究成果丰富,然而其研究框架体系却不够完善。在有关的旅游符号研究文献的基础上,对旅游空间的符号化和旅游活动的符号化过程进行了初步探讨,目的在于提供一个初步的旅游符号学研究框架体系。所谓的旅游符号学,即指用符号学的方法来研究旅游活动的过程。旅游符号空间是旅游活动生存与发展的空间。旅游符号学的研究框架体系应包括旅游符号的解读者——旅游主体和旅游符号的解读对象——旅游吸引物符号系统和旅游媒介符号系统。  相似文献

This paper analyses the represented images of men and women in casino ads of Macau, examines the impact of gender power in the casino industry and discusses the social–cultural construction of masculinity and femininity in a culturally diverse context. A social semiotic analysis of a range of casino brochures and leaflets is presented. The analysis reveals that stereotypical portrayals of gender roles persist in Macau’s casino ads, which privilege the male tourist gaze and reproduce the gender power relations within the hetero-patriarchal system. Despite the trend of women’s involvement in public gambling, casino gambling continues to be upheld as a masculine activity in Macau. The study argues that the casino space is constructed through two aspects – the simultaneous masculinisation of gambling and feminisation of interactive service work, which reflect, respectively, the traditional expectations of the gambling culture and the demands of the modern service-intensive casino business.  相似文献
