Forecasting system thermal efficiencies in technology importing countries

Forecasting the thermal efficiency of a set of power plants belonging to a country is important for energy, water, and environmental planning.In this article an analysis of the way in which the system thermal efficiency (STE) changes is provided, and a forecasting model for the electric utilities of technology importing countries is developed.The model is based on the identification of the speed with which technology is transferred from abroad and of the adjustment process of the system's efficiency to that of the best plant's.The application of the calculation to the South African utility shows that the STE in the year 2015 will be 20 to 25 percent higher than that in the year 1983.

Political risk analysis for Canada and Mexico

A new methodology for political risk analysis was developed and applied to Canada and Mexico. The ideas of an interdisciplinary team of corporate and country experts were obtained in mid-1982 via a two-round Delphi inquiry on socioeconomic change and a survey on business contingencies in Canada and Mexico. The information provided by the panelists was used to describe possible future conditions in Canada and Mexico in the context of alternative U.S. and international conditions.     

Government industrial policy for a healthy world economy

The Japanese concept of “industrial policy” is the subject of this presentation. The central role of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in the formulation of industrial policy for Japan over the past 35 years is reviewed. Several strategic phases are identified: 1945–1952, reconstruction of the economy; 1952–1960, comparative advantage strategy in capital-intensive industries; 1960–1973, transition to an open economy; 1973 to present, positive support policy for promising industries, e.g., subsidies for high-tech sectors and adjustive policy for declining industries (e.g., disposing of excess capacity in the textile sector). The advantages of National industrial policies for the world economy are indicated.     

Further research into a convention for measuring the state-of-the-art of products or processes

In a 1980 study, an attempt was made to provide some degree of quantitative precision to the term “state-of-the-art” by developing an SOA measure for computers and antibiotics. This study expands on the convention developed in the earlier work and applies the approach to five technologies: aircraft turbine engines, high-temperature materials as used in blades and vanes, manmade fibers, farm tractors, and coal gasification. Satisfactory state-of-the-art measures were developed for aircraft turbine engines and high-temperature materials, and the maturity of farm tractor technology was confirmed. The convention also revealed that manmade fiber technology has been in a refining mode since the introduction of nylon. Coal gasification has not gained enough commercial experience to merit a state-of-the-art measure.
