This teaching note presents an innovation in accounting education called the Philanthropy Project. 2 The Philanthropy Project emphasizes experiential learning and is designed to promote the learning of discipline-specific concepts while simultaneously addressing the social needs of the surrounding community. In the Philanthropy Project, students receive money to distribute to not-for-profit organizations (NFPs) based on a competitive proposal process they help to develop and administer. A distinguishing characteristic of this project is that it is not a simulation. Students make real decisions that have immediate consequences to certain groups of people in their own communities. They have to make difficult choices by allocating scarce resources to some agencies and saying “no” to other agencies, all with worthy causes.  相似文献

The current economic environment has brought to light the financial literacy epidemic in this country. A lack of personal financial education has contributed to the increase in consumer credit debt, a trend evident for many college students who often have significant credit card debt. One way to combat this problem is through financial literacy education. This paper describes a service-learning project implemented through a Beta Alpha Psi chapter, which fulfills the educational objectives of the accounting curriculum and addresses an educational need. The project provides reciprocity of learning between members of Beta Alpha Psi and their audience, college underclassmen. The results indicate that the project is successful in educating both presenters and audience members on basic financial knowledge as well as developing technical and communication skills of Beta Alpha Psi members. The project outline presented in this paper provides a framework for others to use.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article presents the findings of a study, which explores the benefits of a service-learning (SL) approach from the perspective of students. The SL approach employed in this study combines theoretical discourse in human relations and personal development with active engagement in community projects. We collected 61 reflective essays from undergraduate students at an Austrian university about their impressions of the lecture and of the two community service projects they participated in. The thematic analysis of the textual data revealed that the SL approach adopted in our course largely benefitted the students. Challenge, positive emotions, affiliation, and learning are the four key dimensions which characterise the students’ experiences. Amongst the learning outcomes reported by the students, SL facilitated self-awareness, self-confidence, self-esteem, stress-resistance, enhanced communication, and problem-solving skills. Despite some challenges, SL proves to be a promising experiential pedagogical approach, which, we argue, is highly relevant to tourism management students.  相似文献

Service-learning courses provide students the opportunity to apply and relate economic concepts and theories to real-world experiences within the community and to reflect on the relationship between theory and practice. One form of service-learning is student-based instruction, which involves college students teaching economics in the neighboring community, such as to high school students. The author provides a detailed application of the student-based instruction model of service-learning to an Economics of Race and Gender course at a liberal arts college. Upon completion of the project, students completed a survey about their service-learning experiences. The results indicated that the service-learning project enhanced student learning and created a more enriching course experience.
