The model of public policy studied in this paper has heterogeneous citizens/voters and two public goods: one (roads) chosen directly by an elected policy‐maker, and the other (pollution) stochastically dependent on the amount of roads. Both a one‐country and a two‐country version of the model are analyzed; the latter displays externalities across the countries which create incentives for free riding and strategic delegation. The welfare effects of providing the policy‐maker with information about the relationship between roads and pollution are investigated, and it is shown that more information hurts some—sometimes even all—citizens. In particular, the opportunity not to create an institution for information gathering can serve as a commitment device for a country, although with the unfortunate effect of making the overall outcome even worse. Implications for the welfare effects of “informational lobbying” are also discussed. 相似文献

We introduce a general modeling framework to predict the outcomes, at the population level, of individual psychology and behavior.
The framework prescribes that researchers build a cost function that embodies knowledge of what trait values (opinions, behaviors,
etc.) are favored by individual interactions under given social conditions. Predictions at the population level are then drawn
using methods from statistical mechanics, a branch of theoretical physics born to link the microscopic and macroscopic behavior
of physical systems. We demonstrate our approach building a model of cultural contact between two cultures (e.g., immigration),
showing that it is possible to make predictions about how contact changes the two cultures. 相似文献

以1998~2004年A股非金融类上市公司发起的并购重组事件为样本,通过实证考察并购行业模式与收购企业价值之间的因果关系,证实我国上市公司实行行业相关性并购较无关性并购对收购企业具有更强的价值创造效应。同时,将对应于企业价值指标、有关并购价值创造的经济学假设分解成五类财务因素指标,通过比较不同并购模式下收购方指标变动特征的异同,揭示出规模经营、交易内部化和市场势力是影响收购企业价值的主导因素。 相似文献

One main problem with both acquisitions and alliances is separating the attractive partners from the rest. An additional problem with alliances is getting each partner to provide its best assets and efforts. One solution offered for the acquisition adverse selection problem is due diligence through a pre-acquisition alliance; however, none of the papers recommending such an approach analyze the alliance adverse selection and moral hazard problems. A number of recent papers in environmental economics have focused on the process of researching preferences – agents are uncertain
about preferences but with effort may narrow their uncertainty. This issue has arisen in formulating bids in contingent valuation
(CV) as well as the debate over the divergence between WTP and WTA. In the context of CV, it has been suggested that the hypothetical
nature of the preference elicitation process biases responses. This paper provides both a theoretical model and experimental
evidence to contribute to this debate. The model is a model of competitive bidding for a private good with two components
that are particularly relevant to the debate. The first component is that bidders are unsure of their own value for the private
good but may purchase information about their own value (researching preferences). The second component is that there is a
probability that the auction is hypothetical – that the winning bidder will not get the private good and will not pay the
winning bid. The experiment tests this theoretical model of bidding equilibrium and analyzes the effects of variations in
the parameters (hypotheticalness, information costs and number of agents) on the endogenous variables (such as the proportion
of bidders who become informed and the winning bid). Experimental results suggest that an increase in the hypotheticalness
of an auction tends to decrease the likelihood that bidders pay for information on their valuation with an ambiguous effect
on the winning bid.
