Who is a stakeholder? In this paper, stakeholders are defined in terms of who has a stake in an issue instead of who has a stake in a firm, and in so doing introduces the idea of an “issue network.” Drawing on concepts familiar to the social movements (sociology) and interest groups (political science) literatures, I argue that members of an issue network can be identified as those with grievances, resources, or opportunities. To illustrate this argument, I consider the issue of land use in the western United States, showing how various environmental organizations might fit into such a land use network. I conclude with the INSPIRE model, which locates my argument in this larger model of stakeholder management currently being constructed in the stakeholder literature. Copyright © 2010 ASAC. The “coopetition” paradox exists when two or more organizations are simultaneously involved in cooperative and competitive interactions. In the accounting industry, small firms encounter coopetition when they align themselves with other independent firms to form accounting associations and networks (AANs). AANs are a type of interorganizational relationship (IOR) that provide opportunities for member firms to collaborate by sharing important resources such as expertise, best practices, and manpower. However, member firms also compete in the marketplace for clients and human capital, which incentivizes uncooperative and opportunistic behavior. If managed inadequately, coopetitive tensions can significantly hamper AAN benefits and may lead to IOR failure. Given the considerable longevity of AANs, we interview 42 high‐level accounting professionals to understand AANs' apparent successful management of these tensions. Leveraging coopetition and IOR theory, our analysis suggests that transactional mechanisms (contractual agreements, organizational structure, selection/monitoring processes) and relational mechanisms (trust, social ties, reciprocity) play key roles in encouraging healthy cooperation and competition among member firms. One of our main conclusions is that these mechanisms contribute to AAN success because they are leveraged comprehensively across each IOR life cycle phase, and they are mutually reinforcing, with transactional mechanisms providing the foundation to inspire confidence and encourage the development of relational mechanisms. Our research enriches existing accounting and coopetition literature, provides a new perspective for AANs, and responds to calls to understand key factors of IOR success.  相似文献

The paper provides a review of current issues relating to the use of DNA profiling in forensic science. A short historical section gives the main statistical milestones that occurred during a rapid development of DNA technology and operational uses. Greater detail is then provided for interpretation issues involving STR DNA profiles, including:
  • – methods that take account of population substructure in DNA calculations;

  • – parallel work carried out by the US National Research Council;

  • – the move away from multiple independence testing in favour of experiments that demonstrate the robustness of casework procedures;

  • – the questionable practice of source attribution 'with reasonable scientific certainty';

  • – the effect on the interpretation of profiles obtained under increasingly sensitive techniques, the LCN technique in particular;

  • – the use of DNA profiles as an intelligence tool;

  • – the interpretation of DNA mixtures.


Experience of presenting DNA evidence within UK courts is also discussed. The paper then summarises a generic interpretation framework based on the concept of likelihood ratio within a hierarchy of propositions. Finally the use of Bayesian networks to interpret DNA evidence is reviewed.  相似文献

This article introduces the unique context of a partially‐integrated channel (PIC) that incorporates both market and hierarchical governance forms. In so doing, it examines determinants of the manufacturer's support for a PIC. Using power‐dependence and marketing effectiveness theories, we collected data from 172 marketing managers in charge of PICs in 15 companies in South Korea. The results showed that from the power‐dependence perspective, demand volatility, manufacturer's competitive intensity, and channel concentration are positively related to a manufacturer's dependence on the retailer, which is positively related to the manufacturer's support for the PIC with a retailer. From a marketing effectiveness perspective, channel bonding and customer linking are positively associated with manufacturer marketing effectiveness, which is an antecedent to PIC support for a retailer. How do small players' product innovations initially diffuse within a mature organizational field? This paper studies endogenous and exogenous factors that facilitate the spread of a product innovation—icewine—introduced by small players within the Canadian wine field. Using data from 1985 to 2000, I find support for my hypotheses that environmental jolts, theorization of small players' innovations by small players within the media, and innovation recognition by authorities in other more prestigious fields increased the extent to which icewine has been diffused within the field. Specifically, my study sheds light on how small players can initiate change within mature fields with the support of other institutional players.  相似文献

We present an upstream model of impression management, focusing on how institutional actors may influence the rhetorical content of images IPO firms present to potential investors. Focusing on impression management to minimize poor and maximize good perceptions, we examined the risk, strategy, and governance images presented in prospectuses of 167 firms who issued an IPO between 1996 and 2000. Our results show that dependence on professional firms and IPO firm network prominence help shape the rhetorical construction of these images and suggest that impression management can be understood in terms of Goffman's team‐based effort to control a social interaction situation. Social network analysis (SNA) examines whether interactions between individuals, teams, and organizations result in network structures and patterns that can explain important outcomes, including firm performance, management reporting behaviors, investor beliefs, and audit outcomes. This paper reviews the growing body of work on SNA in accounting and finance research, focusing on 162 articles published between 2000 and 2021, and offers a roadmap that may help move this literature forward. Our survey summarizes the elements of SNA, organizes this literature within a theoretical framework, and provides a thematic discussion of the context and contribution of the selected studies. We also discuss opportunities and challenges for future research. Finally, we include an empirical illustration of the key concepts and tools of SNA. We believe that SNA will continue to offer an interesting avenue for conducting high-impact and cross-disciplinary research in accounting and finance.  相似文献
