张元济与近代基督教——以《外交报》为中心

“文明排外”的思想是近代中国有西方教育背景或者说有世界视野的知识分子,针对义和团以来盲目排外的做法,而提出的一种外交策略。张元济参与发起创办的《外交报》力主这一观点,但是仔细分析,张元济的这一思想又有其独特性,与近现代之交的视野开阔、大刀阔斧的文化激进派相比,稍嫌保守;与近代自改革时期的拘守一隅、盲目排外的文化保守派相比,又觉超拔。说它带有实用主义的色彩,更主要是因为它是建立在文化本位主义基础之上的,它的历史价值似乎也应该体现在这里。张元济这一思想的独特性在对待近代基督教问题上得到了集中的体现。
