Standards and Technological Innovation The Intellectual Challenge of the Nineties

Institution:has been with Motorola since 1976 when he joined (after 10 years in Research and Development at Bell Telephone Laboratories) the company's Communications Products Division as Director of Manufacturing Systems in Schaumburg, Illinois. One year later he was named Assistant Director of Mobile Product operations in Fort Worth, Texas. In 1978 he became Appointed Vice President, Portable Products and Director of Handie-Talkie products in Fort Lauderdale. He was promoted to Appointed Vice President and General Manager of the Communications Sectors Paging Division in Fort Lauderdale in 1981 and in 1983 was elected a Corporate Vice President and made General Manager, Portable and Paging Divisions. He returned to the Schaumburg headquarters of the Communications Sector in April 1984 where he was promoted to Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager of the Sector. Fisher was elected Senior Executive Vice President and Deputy to the Chief Executive Office in July 1986 and a Director of Motorola in August 1986. His promotion to President and Chief Executive Officer of Motorola Inc was effective 1 January 1988. In January 1990, he was elected Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the company.
Abstract:At the final Business Performance Lecture, George Fisher, CEO of Motorola, spoke of the importance of standards and intellectual property rights in the emerging global consumer society. Such standards should not create barriers but must facilitate the free flow of information, goods and services. Without this, wealth creation will slow and social and political problems will increase.
