Structural Change and Productivity Growth Driven by Biased Technological Progress

This study theoretically demonstrates the mechanism of structural change driven by biased technological progress on total productivity;and through numerical simulation,it analyzes the impact of the gap of technological progress rate and the increase of product varieties within sectors on structural change and the growth rate of total productivity.Based on the general law of consumption demand,this study introduces the concept of saturation threshold into the model.This can not only depict the influence of demand side forces on structural change,but also reveal how the intra-sectors structural change affects the inter-sectors structural change.The main conclusions show that the structural change driven by biased technological progress has an"inverted U"effect on the growth rate of total productivity.After entering the inflection point of"inverted U-shaped",the sustained promotion of structural change on productivity growth rate is highly dependent on the balanced development between sectors and the continuous increase of product varieties within sectors.This is of great significance for China to promote the upgrading of industrial structure to achieve high-quality development.
