CHIPS DRIVE THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY
Abstract:Though Zhao Mingyu, Director at the automobile electronic product center of Renesas Electronics in the Greater China region, touched automobile electronics business in 1999, it was not until five years later that he began to understand the philosophies of automobile electronic design. Four or five years ago, Zhao’s company started to develop total solutions for homegrown companies. The turnkey solution for their first "relatively large system", a dashboard, was worked out after two years, and now it is adopted by several domestic automobile manufacturers. In the meantime, industrial giants Freescale and Infineon also started their research and development in automobile electronics. The first project of Freescale’s auto labs in China was also the dashboard, while Infineon’s local technology team started from the electronics for automobile bodies. The research and development activities of semiconductor companies in China mainly lies in system solutions based on chips rather than the chip designing, due to the special characteristics of the industrial environment in China. On foreign markets, the automobile manufacturers and first tier suppliers are powerful enough to develop system themselves, while in China, they are still growing.
