国产大豆之惑

The Trouble of Homegrown Soybean

The crops reported overall bumper harvest in 2012, but the soybean output declined. So the debate over homegrown soybeans arises again. There are several reasons for soybean output reduction in 2012, including reduced growing areas, and farmers’ less enthusiasm in growing soybeans. Meanwhile, as imported soybeans are scrambling for market share as a strong competitor and oil beans and food beans are squeezing each other’s market share, foreign companies joined the acquisitions. As a result, the difficulty that homegrown soybeans are faced with continues. The government has taken measures to encourage farmers to grow soybeans, among which the protective acquisition is considered the most effective one. However, as other grain products are rising in price, this measure is gradually losing its value. The purchase and storage policy to some extent prevented homegrown soybeans in Northeast China from the shock by imported products, and farmers enjoyed higher profit, but the profit from growing soybeans is still much lower than growing other crops such the corn. Therefore, the growing areas of soybeans do not stabilize or expand despite the support from government. However, homegrown soybeans are important bargaining chips for China to contend against the international grain producers. In this way, stronger measures should be taken to support the development of homegrown soybeans.
