加强和改进大学生思想政治教育工作的核心就是加强大学生的理想信念教育，而思想政治理论课是对大学生进行理想信念教育的主渠道、主阵地，必须充分发挥思想政治理论课的政治导向功能，促进大学生对理想信念的认知深化和认同能力：充分发挥思想政治理论课的政治警戒作用，解决好大学生的意识形态的一元导向与自我价值的多元选择的矛盾问题，即个人理想与共同理想的关系问题；充分发挥思想政治理论课的学理功能，解决好理想信念教育与大学生自身成才的关系问题；充分发挥思想政治理论课的方法论功能，解决好大学生理想信念教育和复杂多变的社会现实的关系问题。
