Abstract: | This paper examines British and Irish work-related values and attitudes. It is set in the context of the importance of eliciting high work commitment and effort from employees as a necessary condition for enhanced competitive performance. More specifically it seeks to establish if British and Irish work values and attitudes conform to what we would expect from Hofstede's indices. On the basis of the original international research presented here, Hofstede's indices are found not to be very reliable predictors of work values and attitudes in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland. The results suggest that work effort is associated with different values in these two countries. |
