China and Aging in the 21st Century:Challenges to Research and Practice

China's continuing rise in the 21st century and the rapid aging of its population have both received worldwide attention.This chapter reflects on the relevance of social research on aging in China by examining an original case study in conjunction with a review of the literature.Important issues such as tobacco use,gaps in research and a lack of intervention are pointed out to demonstrate potential challenges and opportunities for researchers,practitioners,and policy makers.The issues and possible solutions are analyzed from such inter-disciplinary perspectives as social medicine,behavioral health,mental health,stress,social support networks,community education,social welfare,and public policy.The discussions may provide some useful suggestions for professionals and guidance for students to pursue research and career interests in related fields.
