Environmental Protection and Economic Development: the Controversy between Porter Hypothesis and Traditional Neo-Classical Economics

Environmental protection and economic development are closely related to each other.Based on the traditional neo-classical economics,the strict environmental protection will surely increase the private cost of the manufacturers,reduce their competitiveness,and bring the negative influence on the economic development of a country.However,Potter hypothesis advances that the strict environmental protection can lead to innovation,offset the cost,and make the manufacturer more competitive in world market,which has challenged the theoretical frame on the environmental protection of traditional neo-classical economics.The comparative analysis shows that the disputes between Potter hypothesis and traditional neo-classical economics have their respective theoretical foundation and empirical evidence.Realization of Potter hypothesis lies in the actual execution,especially the constituting and strict executing of the proper standard that Porter hypothesis emphasizes.
