Canadian Ideas and Options for Managing Urban Development--The Case Study of Vancouver Region

This paper introduces Canadian ideas and options for managing urban development. It examines the means by which land use and land development can be controlled and directed by government planning in the Canadian province of British Columbia. A detailed discussion of the regional plan for the City of Vancouver is provided. This regional plan is called the Vancouver Liveable Region Strategic Plan. This paper is organized into four sections. The first section provides an overview and introduction to the Vancouver region. this section describes Vancouver's regional geography, population growth, and economic development trends. The second section examines two main policy options for growth management. The third section examines the planning ideas contained in Vancouver's Liveable Region Strategic Plan. It identifies and discusses four key planning ideas:1) protecting the green zone, 2)town centre planning, 3) compact urban development and 4) transportation options. The final section concludes with lessons that China and Chinese planners can learn from Vancouver's regional plan.
