Vegetable Market Enters the Supermarket
Abstract:Many citizens used to stroll down to the morning market to buy vegetables and fruits. Now they find a better place to go and are found queuing in the supermarket to buy cheaper and fresher produce. On June 2, 2009, the Festival of Farmers’ Direct-supply Vegetables and Fruits was held at Carrefour in Beijing, and fresh vegetables transported from Ningcheng, Shandong, Tianjin and Jilin, etc. were sold there. Currently, the supermarkets are competing to purchase agricultural products directly from farmers to reduce the price. Furthermore, they even try to rival with traditional vegetable market. Agricultural products purchased directly from the vegetable base account for over 50% in supermarkets such as Wu-Mart, Carrefour and Jingkelong. Generally speaking, fruits and vegetables have to go through many tiers of distributors before they reach the supermarkets. Direct purchase simplif ies the circulation and the price is 20%~40% lower than the market price. It is the f irst time that farmers take the initiatives to do business directly with the retailing giants. It deserves our attention as to how the traditional agricultural market will continue to retain the consumers and how the "supermarket + agricultural market" pattern will get along in the future.
